Time to celebrate

You just haven’t lived until you’ve heard the following line from Gary Sheffield:

"You guys look too dry. I’ll be back."Division_champs_hat

There I was, standing in the Yankees’ clubhouse with Bordo, T-Kep and a couple of other reporters when Sheffield decided that we hadn’t been properly doused with celebratory champagne.

The three of us looked at each other with a look of fear, wondering what would happen next. Sheffield walked back to us, his hand out of sight, and all I could think was, "Close your eyes."

As it turns out, Sheffield was just messing with us, but I did get my fill of cheap champagne on my clothes, in my hair and in several other places. Such is life on the Yankees beat.Melky_cano_clinch

This is the fifth AL East celebration I have seen (I wasn’t in Chicago in 2001, just a week or so after 9/11), and I have also seen postseason celebrations in 2001, 2003 and 2004. This may have been the wildest one, as youngsters such as Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera took it upon themselves to shower every single teammate at least once, shouting their nickname as they did it.

The veterans got involved, too. Derek Jeter was crushed by A-Rod and a couple of teammates as he spoke to Kim Jones on the YES Network. The youngsters surrounded Bobby Abreu and showered him repeatedly, then they moved on to Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera and so on. No one was spared.

Even the on-field staff took a hit. Mike Borzello, the bullpen catcher, and Charlie Wonsowicz, who runs the video operations, were sitting in a corner of the clubhouse, trying to avoid the bubby which was flying around the room. Nice try, fellas. Jaret Wright walked over to them with a full bottle of champagne and let loose, soaking both men.

Good times.

Jeter_torre_clinchIt’s hard to accurately describe a clubhouse celebration. Even before I had a single drop land on me, my eyes were watering from the mist of champagne in the air. It is total mayhem, and when the players say that it never gets old, I believe them. After 152 games, to accomplish what the Yankees did is something to celebrate, even if they didn’t do it with a win on Wednesday.

I have a feeling this won’t be the Yankees’ last celebration of the year.

(I also have to throw a shoutout to Matt and Marcie Sadofsky, two of my good friends and a pair of die-hard Yankees fans. Matt and Marcie welcomed the newest little Yankees fan into the world on Saturday, as their son, Alex Daniel, was born. I fully expect to see the proud parents at Yankee Stadium during the playoffs. Congrats, guys.)

wow mark added an update to the update…..congrats to ur friends….so would you say this team’s chemistry is a better dynamic than all the other years since the dynasty? I sense that by what little I know about their clubhouse

  2. Kasey

looks like i was wrong about this year. huh. who saw THAT coming?

enjoy the rest of the season and the postseason, everyone.

  3. haggard823@aol.com

what a great post! It is great to get an inside report on the Yanks celebration. I would give my left nut to be celebrating with those guys! Very glad to have clinched now and can play out the rest of the season resting key guys and getting sheff and matsui in the field risk free. Its going to be a great october!!!!

    Love Jeter’s quote:

“It doesn’t get old,” Jeter said. “This ranks up there with all of them. Every one is different. People say, ‘Is this one more special than the others?’ They’re all special.

“People understand that there’s more work to do, but let’s enjoy this.”

Yup. It never gets old and they are all special…

Spritz me later…no booze on the job!

    Daily News reporting:

… that despite a visit by Mets officials on Tuesday afternoon after a Yankee Tuesday morining visit, that the Yankees are on the verge of announcing the AAA move to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The announcement could be made as early as today.

It appears Columbus will be the AAA team of the Nationals.

The Mets contract is up with Norfolk, and they tried a SWB ploy at the last minute. They then tried going back to Norfolk but Norfolk is leaning toward the Orioles.

It looks like the mets are going to be the ones screwed here, as it looks like they are going to wind up in New Orleans.

  6. petrany@marshall.edu

    “who saw THAT coming?”

    A lot of people 😉

I am not really all that excited right now though. This is more than a bit anti-climactic. We all knew they’d be here. The Season starts in ten odd days.

But congrats to them all the same.

  7. bhahn@mvtelegraph.com

Say it ain’t so, the Yankees could shop A-Rod? He could be traded? I know he hasn’t had the greatest of seasons, but can we not jump to conclusions until the post-season is over? After all, he is still A-Rod. He was the 2005 MVP. Who would play 3B anyway?
I’m sorry, I know he hasn’t been clutch this year, but that’s allowed Jeter to move into the MVP spotlight, something I think Jeter has deserved for years. If A-Rod was batting .300-plus and 50 or so HRs, we wouldn’t be talking about Jeter for MVP, it would be an A-Rod repeat. Well, can we give the guy a break until the post-season? I’d still rather have A-Rod in pinstripes than batting against the Yankees…especially for the Angels or BoSox. Please, please please tell me the rumors are just rumors.

  8. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Haha Lola. Its amazing how two different reports can get something so vastly different out of the same article. Vaccaro from the Posts take is completely different.

  9. Lola

Are they just idiots that cant read or do they realize that the interviews where done OVER A MONTH AGO?????????
Who wants to donate to the Mikes getting laid fund? (Mike Lupica and Vaccaro). They need to get laid! LOSERS!

    MMM…Sounds interesting…

    Oops, you didn’t mean me.

  11. paul1040@aol.com

OK, I found and Read a Lupica column “Giambi’s still needling – Time to get off A-Rod’s case” and actually found it to be pro-ARod.

What problem did you have with that column Lola?

And now who is Mike Vaccaro? Does he write for a paper somewhere?

  12. luckyleftie300@aol.com

“looks like i was wrong about this year. huh. who saw THAT coming?”

Uhh, just about every Yankee fan with a brain in their head. You were the guy claiming win after win that it wouldn’t matter, the Red Sox juggernaut was just too much for the Yankees to overcome. A 5 game beatdown occured and you STILL thought it wasn’t enough. So the answer to your question Kasey is EVERYONE. Go Yanks.

  13. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Vaccaro writes for the Post.

A friend e-mailed me, he got off the phone with someone from Scranton and says the AAA move is a done deal.

  14. paul1040@aol.com

Thanks, Mike. I will have to look for his column. I do not read the Post unless a specific srticle draws me there.

The NY paper I read the most is Newsday, mostly because I grew up on Long Island, and the Times as a secondary source.

  15. Lola

Paul, dont bother. Its just a rehash of everything u have heard. These writers need new material. I am tired of the same old same old. *yawn*

And oh, by the way, i wasnt saying that because he said anything bad about alex (i dont only defend alex, u know :-p ) just in general what he said about giambi and his tone.

Plus i just think he needs to **** cause i am tired of him thinking he is the smartest guy in the room.

  16. paul1040@aol.com

The Sports Illustrated article is just plain stupid.

Stupid for the players involved, each of them.

It was intended to sell magazines, stir up a little trouble maybe.

But the bottom line is the players allowed the article to happen, knowing full well no good could come of it.

  17. a24diun@yahoo.com

    Good clinching afternoon everyone!! 🙂
This comment caught my eye when scrolling thru:

//Who wants to donate to the Mikes getting laid fund?//

Ummm can I donate to the Mike Mussina getting laid club.. I will give all I have! hehe *evil grin*

LOL sorry…You ladies on this blog are very good at not drooling over Yankee hawtness but that one was just too good to resist 🙂

  18. a24diun@yahoo.com

Anyhoo, I did just go out and get Post and Daily News.. not only is Mike Vaccaro a complete piece of poop-for-brains but he’s also a plagiarist..he’s saying the EXACT same thing John Kruk said last night. If he has to bite his caustic one liners off the fat, ugly, annoying cohost of BBT, then he is even more pathetic than I first thought. If A.Rod is reading his press today, I hope he realizes this!

  19. paul1040@aol.com

Now I just wrote a long treatise which I was going to post here. I think maybe I won’t.

But I am disturbed by the tone this blog has taken this last hour.

When someone does not agree with you on a sports issue you declare him unable to sexually satisfy himself?

I saw the same thing happen a couple of days ago when a few jackals ganged up on Kasey’s foolish pessimism.

    Tawdry stuff. I am disappointed.

  20. a24diun@yahoo.com

Hi Paul 🙂 …re: your post..
As much as I malign certain baseball journalists, as a journalism student myself I do understand their dilemma. Their jobs are on the line, if they don’t/can’t produce interesting and sometimes controversial copy, the editors will find someone else who can. So while I do understand where they’re coming from, the A.Rod situation is REALLY out of hand and at this point theyre just rubbing salt in a wound that *was* already practically healed. Also I am REALLY sick of ESPN’s anti-Yankee bias…especially when Tino has to sit there and listen to it 😦 A.Rod *should* be able to ignore bad press but he is who he is, and I just hope he is not letting this get to him.

  21. Lola

  22. Lola

Paul, my mistake on getting laid comment. I guess its a youth speak habit…we dont mean malice by it, but i see your point.

  23. Lola

and i work around guys..lol..the solution to everything and everyone is “they need to get laid”. i picked up the habit, i guess.

  25. a24diun@yahoo.com

Just read Pete’s blog about Giambi and Bruney doing shots of Jack, I love it!! 🙂 LOL I knew Giambi would go for something harder than bubbly. Gotta love him and every time I celebrate a big Yankee win that I know they’re celebrating too, I motivate myself by asking, “can I drink more tonight than Giambi will?” hehehe

  26. Lola

the yankees are the most good looking team in the mlb. You’ve got a shortstop that every girl and their grandmother wants, a 3rd baseman with movie star good looks, a 2nd baseman with an incredible smile and twinkle in his eyes (my hubby!), a incredibly delightfully adobarable outfielder named Melky (even comes with a cute name!), the best dimples in the league in bobby abreu, a tattooed first baseman with bad boy appeal, Farnsie the Fox as the makeshift closer, an incredibly gorgeous top pitching prospect in phillip hughes, the cutest 1st baseman ever in andy phillips, a tenured catcher with the most adorable ears i’ve ever seen, a loveable top 50 best looking people nominee in mr williams, …need i go on?
Kevein Thompson, Jose Veras, Dotel, Wang, Jaret, Mariano…all men that are also attractive. Man, i’m a lucky girl! 😀

  27. a24diun@yahoo.com

//Yeah, Bruney does seem like a Jack kind of guy…//

Indeed! This whole time I have pictured him driving a jacked-up pickup truck that’s roughly the size of my bathroom, blasting Metallica.. the Jack fits into that picture perfectly!

  28. a24diun@yahoo.com

Amen, Farnsworth is so hot it should almost be illegal. Especially w/his glasses on!
LOL I gather all my fellow Yankee chicas here already have their hubbies set..I know we all have to share Jeter and A.Rod lol but I hope Moose is not taken yet cause he is sooo mine! 🙂

  29. Lola

Ha ha, i dont believe the Moose has been hooked on this site yet. I think the moose is pretty handsome too. I might admire andy, farnsie and tanyon sturtze (i miss him 😦 , but i am already hooked to the second baseman and i have eyes for him and him only. 😀
(except if Grady Sizemore happens to, you know, be in the area.. :-D)

  30. Mark

Hey folks … just because you don’t agree with someone doesn’t make them wrong.

I haven’t read Vaccaro’s column yet, but he is one of the best columnists in the city.

As for the SI piece, I thought it was very good. Verducci may be the best in the business, and his reporting is tremendous. Again, you may not like it because you feel people are picking on Alex, but it was a very interesting piece.

  31. Lola

    Hi Mark,
i agree with you that just because we dont agree doesnt make them wrong.

And it is a matter of opinion that you think Vaccaro is one of the best columnists. He may very well have written some pretty good columns, but for the most part, the impression i get from reading him is that of someone who lacks objectivity and doesnt care to see the issue from a neutral standpoint, or from both sides of the fence. This impression was reinforced in today’s column, and i honestly wouldnt have paid it mind, because i am familiar with his writing tactics by now, but today’s column was pretty bad. Not only did it implicitly state incorrect “facts”, but it also seemed to be spurred more by personal malice than just reporting of sports.

  32. Lola

As for Verducci, i dont believe anyone can disagree with his writing style and talent he has to carry along the reader with him. He’s a good writer, thus he writes good pieces.
I dont believe the case in question is of if the piece was good or not, but rather the intent and timing of when it was released. The said interviews were done a month ago. I find it interesting they perfectly timed it for now to release. I believe it was all a scheme to create propaganda and drama in other to sell papers. I dont fault them…the sports business is just that, a business. So to me, he is just doing his job.

Who i do fault though, are the people who refuse to think objectively themselves. And thats with every issue past sports. Politics, current affairs, whatever…the media should not be seen as a voice of reason, but rather a source of information for the masses to take and draw up their own logical conclusions.

  33. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

I just found it interesting because two writers got two completely different columns out of the same article. A lot of that article is in how you intepret it. I do agree with whoever it was who said that all of the players involved allowed themselves to be interviewed. Its not like they have editorial control over the final result OR how its interpreted. If they want control, don’t say anything. Simple as that. I dont think Alex helped himself out by some of the things he said, to be honest. I also think it didn’t portray Giambi in the best light, I really dont think he meant things the way they came accross, but thats just my interpretation. I dont particularly care for SI as a magazine – I canceled the trial subscription I had – but I do think it was an interesting article. I think the timing of it (just as the yankees are going into the playoffs) is unfortunate, but I admit to being cynical, lol. I do realize that lengthy *to print* times between when an interview is conducted and when the actual article is released are actually quite normal for magazines. I personally think a mountain is being made out of a molehill with this, and all I hope is that it doesn’t hurt the team. Arod has been great in September and I think it would speak volumes if he didn’t allow this to derail that, or even be perceived as doing so. I dont think Arod is infalliable or perfect, and I can see what people mean when they talk of his strange people skills..they maybe could be a little better developed, lol. Like Lola says though, he’s not a criminal or a wife beater and he plays hard and gives his all, and there are things about him to be admired too. I’d love to see them win #27 and put some of this to bed for once and for all.

  34. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Oh, i apologize for the length of that post and the bad spelling/grammar that will be contained in it. Proofreading is my friend, but I didnt do it on that post – too much of a hurry and it was longer than I though, lol.

  35. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

    *thought.. not though.

    I give up, lol.

No more posting when I can’t be sure to post something that somewhat articulate, lol.

  36. yankeefan1@enter.net

Sturtze will be 37 next year and is coming off major shoulder surgery.

It might be a good bet to think that his career could be over.

  37. yankeefan1@enter.net

Vaccaro is good at times, although I have called him out a few times for not doing his research. (I’ve done that to a few columnists…some appreciate it, some don’t…hey, I’m not the one who did the sloppy research!). Once I corrected Jayson Stark twice in the same week. He recognized his errors and was very gracious in thanking me.

The last time I called out Vac was when he was pleading for the Yanks to take Clemens back and I argued against it. I know Roger is doing nicely in his “half-season” but I still would argue against it.

Olney stated yesterday or today that he thinks Roger will go to Boston next year. Let him. Another “half-season” and if he goes to Boston he may find the AL lineups too tough for him. He will be 45 next year so he may also find that he lost it, and that’s just what we would love! Nothing better than for Boston to find out in mid-August that their nice rotation addition simply doesn’t have it anymore in some key divisional tilts.

  38. sunny615@gmail.com

    Pretty cool eh?

Playoff predictions (has no bearing on reality whatsoever):

Twins pull the miracle an win the AL Central. Face the A’s in the ALDS.

    Yanks face the Tigers.

    ALDS:

Twins beat the A’s in 3 games to 2.

Yanks beat the Tigers 3 games to 1.

    NLDS:

Mets beat Wildcard 3 games to 0.

Cards beat NL West champs 3 games to 2.

    ALCS:

Yanks beat Twins 4 games to 2.

    NLCS:

Mets beat Cards 4 games to 1.

    World Series:

Yanks beat Mets 4 games to 2.

  39. yankeefan1@enter.net

I’d have to look this up, but I believe the Yanks won the season series against both the Twins and Tigers (I know they did vs. the Tigers). So if there is a 2 or 3 way tie, I believe that the Yanks own the tiebreaker.

What was the Twins/Tigers matchup like? Who won that tiebreaker?

if you have the numbers on the head to head, post if you can. I’m on a work break so I can’t do it until I get home.

Here are the remaining games. As of now the Yanks are 92-60, Detroit 91-61 (-1) and Minny 90-61 (-1 1/2) for AL best record.

    Yanks…4 @ TB, 3 home Balt, 3 home Tor.

    Det. … today a makeup @ Balt., 3 @ KC, 3 home Tor., 3 home KC

    Minny…today @ Boston, 3 @ Balt. 4 home KC, 3 home White Sox.

  40. paul1040@aol.com

Somehow, despite the teams involved not including the Braves, Atlanta will still lose 3 games in the playoffs’ first round.

Say what we might about the Angels but Oakland seems to be a greater nemesis.

  46. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Ok, I’m cheating very quickly….

The Proctor loss was after Proctor just got off the plane after dealing with a serious family situation (if I recall, his wife and baby?).

  47. yankeefan1@enter.net

Andrew, Caple is known for being very anti-Yankee.

There are times when he is a real wise-*** jerk in being that.

This is another of those times.

  48. paul1040@aol.com

    Tigers vs A’s
9 games, 6 in Oakland, 3 in Detroit

Detroit wins 5, Oakland wins 4

    ____________________________

    Twins vs A’s

    10 games, 4 in Oakland, 6 in Minneapolis-St Paul

Minnesota wins 6, Oakland wins 4

  49. paul1040@aol.com

Andrew, I read the article you linked to, the ARod victory speech and I thought it was hysterical. I loved it.

    Thanks.

  50. bhahn@mvtelegraph.com

Caple even wrote an entire anti-Yankee book called “The Devil Wears Pinstripes.”

Anywho, as one of the ladies on this blog, I think Scott Proctor is a hottie. Sure, there’s Jeter, A-Rod, a clean-cut Johnny Damon looking all Calvin Klein out there, sure, there’s Farnsworth and Mariano, and Dimples Abreu…what’s not to like about looking at the Yankees?

But, contrary to popular belief, that’s not why I’m a Yankee fan. I’m a Yankee fan because they’re the most awesome team in baseball! Woo hoo!

Ok, seriously, I hate watching baseball on ESPN. It’s all about how great the Red Sox are, how much adversity they had…that Jon Miller is a complete blow-hard who just likes to hear himself talk. The best way to watch a Yankee game on ESPN is with the mute button. I am so sick of all the anti-Yankee drivel, the A-Rod saga (which the idiot announcers only make worse). During one of the Red Sox games Sunday, I could hear the fans chanting “A-Rod! A-Rod! A-Rod!” when he came up to bat in the 9th with one out, a runner on first and the Sox up by 1. Face it, fickle as we apparently are, we love A-Rod and still believe he’ll come through in the clutch. I don’t think he or Giambi meant to sound like they did in SI. But hey, what’s a season without some controversy? Remember Munson and Reggie?

  51. yankeefan1@enter.net

Yes, I’ve compared the A-Rod 2006 to Reggie’s 1977. Hopefully the end result will be the same.

I do see that the twins were 16-2 in interleague and the Yanks 10-8. Since tiebreakers probably deal with what you did within your OWN league, does that mean the Yanks would have the advantage?

Twins/Yanks 3-3 this year…hmm…if twins win division and have same record as Yanks, who is # 1 seed?

  52. yankeefan1@enter.net

Did they come out with the schedules for the Divisional Series yet? Usually 3 of the 4 will start on the 3rd, with the other starting the following day. Any word?

  53. btide21@aim.com

Not from what I’ve seen. But the Yankees schedule might look like this presuming they get home field.:
    Oct. 3: Home

    Oct. 4: Home

    Oct. 6: Away

    Oct. 7: Away (If necessary)

    Oct. 8: Home (If necessary)

  54. yankeefan1@enter.net

That is what I thought and what i am going by, Alex. Thanks.

I’m on vacation 10/2 to 12, so I’ll be camped in front of the TV watching the games!

  55. btide21@aim.com

I’m part of a play on the 6th and 7th so hopefully both games will be scheduled for 8 ET (which is 9 here). So I’ll be able to catch it around the 2nd or 3rd hopefully.

  56. Lola

i just watched video of clubhouse celebration. it didnt look to me like the team hates arod as the media is puting it. they looked pretty happy with him, cause he got champagned and celebrated with, just like everyone else.
    happy to see that.

  57. Mark

Lola, I think you’re taking all of this A-Rod stuff the wrong way. No one has said that everyone hates him. The SI piece focused more on Giambi and Torre taking a little more of a “tough love” approach with him to get him out of his slump.

To think that he wouldn’t have been celebrating would be ridiculous. There have been several players over the past five years that most other players couldn’t stand, yet they also took part in the celebrations.

  58. Mark

As far as I know, the Yankees will have their home games on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Games 3 and 4 on the road Friday and Saturday. Game 5 would be back in the Bronx on Sunday.

Times won’t be announced until the matchups are set.

  59. btide21@aim.com

I’m glad the Yankees won’t have to face a west coast team. That was ridiculous last year playing game 2 at 10:05 ET. I came home from school and slept for 3 hours so I could watch it. haha

  60. Lola

Ok Mark, i apologize for lumping all the media together =).
And its not the SI article that makes it seem as such, its the other ones taking the article which was already probably taken out of context, yet again out of context and reading too deeply into it as all his team mates hate him. Thats not what the article was about, i know that. But we all know all SOME sportswriters needed was a little petrol to light their fire and they’d take it into a whole new dimension. In the past day alone, i have heard and read way too much nonsense for me to not be peeved about it as i am.

I am not trying to lump the media together…there are some sportswriters i respect for being objective, yet being able to do their jobs. Its just that when it comes to certain issues (the yanks, arod), some of them lose all objective edge and completely go haywire.. :-/

But i should stop talking about this issue…i’m tired of it. Its just that i just read this article about him being a clubhouse cancer that nobody likes, and i watch the video and i’m like, thats right about the most stupid thing to say, given what we all can see happening here.

  61. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Alex how did you celebrate last night. As a fellow underage, I had a bottle of coke and a can of Pringles.

  62. btide21@aim.com

Well, Andrew, the Yankees didn’t clinch until after about 11:30 so I listened to the end of the game on the radio then went to sleep before the Twins and Sox finished (I knew Minny would win anyway) so this morning I got up and had a bowl of Frosted Flakes while reading all the aritcles and looking at the celebration pics. haha

  63. sam13281328@aol.com

Interesting questiont today that was debated on Mike and Mike…..Santana is scheduled to start the last game of season for Twins. Do you use him and if Twins are tied and win, Twins get home field, or do you by pass him so he’d face the Yankees twice in a 5 games series and possibly lose home field? Of course Mike Greenburg said he’d save Santana for NY and Golic said he’d pitch him to win home field…

  64. paul1040@aol.com

    Wow I want some Pringles.

I had 3/4 of a glass of wine and then went back to iced tea.

I like those baked potato flavored Pringles.

    And the Baked Lays chips.

And those Harvest Grain ones or something like that. Other potato chips are too greasy to me.

  65. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

I agree with Paul about the ARod acceptance speech. Capele is responding to the SI article with humor and playing to the idea that everything ARod does is scripted. Yankee fans might be a little defensive right now becuase the SI article has become a news story itself, but I think the acceptance speech is funny.

  66. Lola

Mark, is there anyway we can try to get one of our players to keep a mlblogs like David Wright, Jorge Cantu, Haren and Robertson do??

  67. marksman@ny-yankees.net

I think Melky should blog in Spanish (since he doesn’t speak a word of English) and then Jorge or Rob can translate for us.

  68. sam13281328@aol.com

Enough chatter about A Rod and this and that. It is playoff time, which means our pitching has to step up, we have to get everyone 100% healthy, and get some timely hitting. I don’t want it to be a repeat of the 2005 ALDS. Let’s go Yankees!!!! More often than not, solid pitching and quality defense will wins titles……

  69. Thomas

Congrats again, seems NY is in quite happy mood of city. Can’t believe it is first yr both NY teams got division titles, too much cyclic.

I know the media is all biased and all, with some reporters very anti-Yankee. But that’s media–that’s why there’s free press, you have people saying what they want, and how they think. It is good for society. You don’t need to read/listen to it, or agree it. They can say all they want about A-Rod, thing is just for A-Rod to ignore them, and just play his game.

    As for playoffs:

    AL East: Yanks

AL Central: Twins (I think they can surge past)

    AL WC: Tigers

    AL West: A’s

This would be more favourable for Yanks than facing Twins first. If they face Twins first, unfortunately, I have to give Twins the edge in the first round. If home field and wc/division comes to final weekend, I think the Twins will look at their chances, and would prefer to rest Santana for Game 1 instead of using him in last game, unless they win No. 1 seed. I think so, and that’d be wise for anyone to do.

DET @ NYY: Yanks in 4 – Detroit’s miracle season will not last long as postseason glare blinds and traps tigers; their fantastic pitching staff will win them a game, but offence is too behind

OAK @ MIN: Twins in 4 – Twins have awesome combination of pitching and fundamentals with improved offence, while A’s will fight usual late fatigue; Metrodome will be big advantage

No predictions further, since that’s hayseedish.

  70. Thomas

When you look at season series, look closeless beyond the number of wins. Important are how the games are when, when were they played, any players unavailable then, where the games were played, the team’s standing before the series, important plays during the games, and how the games were won. Those are all critical, and series later in the season and on the road really magnify a team’s potential against opponents.

The only teams Yanks don’t want to face are California teams. Simple as that.

  71. btide21@aim.com

Paul, yes sunchips are the brand and I agree they are excellent. Harvest Grain or harvest cheddar or something is the flavor.

  72. paul1040@aol.com

Thomas, I asked last night, but you may have missed it.

Of which team are you a fan, if any, or do you just like baseball?

    From the UK? Canada?

  73. paul1040@aol.com

I also love French Onion Soup…especially the melted cheese on top.

The best I ever had was at a small bar/restaurant in Montreal. They make all their own soups but the French Onion is outstanding.

The most unusual French onion soup I had was in a Lebanese restaurant.

  74. paul1040@aol.com

Saloon on East St Catherine St., out of the way of the center of activity.

A friend recommended it and I went back a number of times.

Not sure if it is still there but when I return to Montreal I will be sure to go if it is.

  75. paul1040@aol.com

Another great place to eat there is Mike Bossy’s Steakhouse.

But we did not see Mike when we went.

I had a favorite Thai restaurant that was on Amherst St but closed.

  76. paul1040@aol.com

Oh and Carlos and Pepe’s on Peel St, I think. Good Mexican place. About a block from the good movie theater with stadium seating.

  77. paul1040@aol.com

I used to also go to the Peel St Pub which had cheap pitchers of beer and chicken wings. Great place to watch hockey games.

Also was there with friends for a bachelor party. Yeah, we went to Montreal for a bachelor party.

Some of the guys who were not familiar with Montreal expected to use lots of $1 bills during our nighttime excursions for entertainment and were surprised that there were $1 and $2 coins and the smallest bill was $5. It is awkward using a $1 coin in the same way you would use a $1 bill.

  78. paul1040@aol.com

OK I am just rambling on. Devoid of baseball tonight, dagnabbit, I babbled without making my desired point on the Peel St Pub.

It was closed right after the bachelor party visit by the health department for recirculating beer among other things.

I have to say, that on that visit we left no beer in the pitchers nor glasses that could be recirculated.

  79. marksman@ny-yankees.net

I am getting ready to intercept the your-child-was-missing-today message from school at 7pm.

I got back from lunch 20 minutes late because one of my friends had the brilliant idea to go to Starbuck’s after lunch. So naturally, we step back out and see that we were supposed to be in class 5 minutes ago. We sped back, almost killing ourselves and when we got back we were 20 minutes late so we really didn’t feel like going to class and just skipped. So now I need to intercept that phone message.

  80. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

LOL Andrew. I am intrigued by that concept. How does one of those work and how do you go about intercepting it?

  81. paul1040@aol.com

On Crescent St. was Dundee’s Grill that I liked a lot.

I even liked the touristy places like the Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood.

Have been to the Montreal Hard Rock a few times with friends. I think that is also on Crescent St. Planet Hollywood is on St Cath.

  82. paul1040@aol.com

Andrew, will you somehow manage to stay out of prison before you turn 18?

Do you have to impersonate your parents on the phone? Isn’t that a crime?

  83. marksman@ny-yankees.net

It is an automated message saying “your child was missing blah, blah, blah”. I’m going to call one of my friends at around 6:55 and stay on the line until 7:05 and when I hear the little beep, I will switch to the school message and hang that one up, then switch back.

  84. paul1040@aol.com

Another favorite restaurant in Montreal is Moe’s, a local chain. But the one out by Stadium Olympique, not the one by the hockey place, used to be the Molson Centre. This week it is the Bell Canada Centre I think or something like that.

Also Jack Astor’s on the South Shore is a favorite.

Why am I off on a Montreal restaurant tangent?

  85. paul1040@aol.com

This lack of baseball has me stir crazy. (That is a term you may need soon, Andrew.)

I spent 3 hours looking for my Good Seasons salad dressing cruet. OK, maybe 15 minutes, but it seemed like 3 hours. I had found a packet of the dressing mix and wanted to make it and looked all over for the cruet thing which has the clever lines for vinegar, water, oil, sawdust, crayon shavings, or whatever else goes in.

    Hence, I am gleeful.

  86. paul1040@aol.com

Now that I found it and I have the packet in my hand and the cruet I want to make the dressing but it occurred to me that the cruet should be washed because it has been sitting in the cabinets for ages since its last use.

But the dishwasher is not even half full. So I have to wait.

    That, and no baseball tonight.

My life is a living ****.

  87. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

LOL I see, Andrew. So you have to intercept it? What happens if you hang up on it? does it keep trying to call until it gets to snitch on you to someone? Or does it assume its snitching on you was successful if it manages to get through and have someone pickup?

  88. paul1040@aol.com

    Handwash? In the sink?

Not sure I can do that.

Last time I did that the ceiling got very wet and I drowned a plant relatively near the sink.

The dishwasher is much safer and more sanitary as I think it uses 450° water to scald off dirt and creatures.

  89. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Thats not too bad to intercept. Was the FourBucks coffee trip worth the stealth you must now be involved in? lol

  90. paul1040@aol.com

Even as a kid I actually volunteered to do the dishes for my parents, as I was a model child.

But my parents actually got a dishwasher and banned me from that activity because each time I did it the dog was sopping wet.

  91. marksman@ny-yankees.net

LOL I actually spent exactly $4 today. Or $3.99 at least. But yeah it was good. Caramel frapuccinos in the cold weather outside are always enjoyable.

10 minutes to the moment of truth.

  92. paul1040@aol.com

Actually they somehow did not take my side in the dispute that if, in fact, there had been a water fight of any sort. My contention that the dog started it fell on deaf ears.

  93. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Hahaha.. somehow I imagined that might be the case. No point in trying to start the 6th Great Lake in your kitchen. I am allergic to doing dishes myself. I only do them because I am allergic to germs and crusty food more than doing dishes.

  94. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

That’s because blaming the dog (for anything) usually does fall upon deaf ears, lol. Dogs are apparently innocent of all things. Even though my black lab belches and snores like a grown man.

  95. paul1040@aol.com

If I fill the cruet with soapy water and microwave it for 15 minutes, I wonder if that would clean it sufficiently?

  96. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

oh that’s resourceful! You know it probably would… although 15 minutes may be a bit extreme.. in that time the cruet might spontaneously combust.

True, Andrew. Frappacino anything is always worth the cost.. well most times, lol

  97. Thomas

Just baseball in general. Used to like Montreal Expos from living in Canada before, until they relocated.

Catch ya later people, I’m gonna watch the twins/redsox game.

  98. paul1040@aol.com

I recall my very first microwave experience.

I bought a small microwave for my office and I invited my staff to use it also and they made the critical mistake of leaving me alone with a new toy…

  99. paul1040@aol.com

I also tend to eschew directions.

So I decided to heat something in the microwave and looked for something that I could test.

    So I found Pop Tarts™.

    Strawberry, I recall.

Not the Frosted type, though I prefer those now.

  100. paul1040@aol.com

So I unwrapped and put one Pop Tart on a plate and figured, maybe 4 minutes and then I will check to see if it was heated yet.

  101. paul1040@aol.com

    It was like Krackatoa.

If anyone ever saw the Brady Bunch episode where Peter created a volcano, you then have the image I saw through the window of the microwave.

Except it was Mount Strawberry with molton fruit filling bursting out of the center of the Pop Tart™!

  102. paul1040@aol.com

I was searching for a picture of the cruet. It is a glass container with a plastic cap with measuring lines for the ingredients.

    No luck.

  103. paul1040@aol.com

Strawberry lava takes some time to cool. And when it does it is like cement.

It was sad to have to chisel away at the insides of a brand new microwave.

The instruction guide did not cover strawberry lava, and calling technical support it was hard to understand any suggestions through the laughter.

  104. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Oh that can’t have been fun removing the straberry lava. Do I even want to ask how someone manages to get their tie stuck in a printer?

  105. a24diun@yahoo.com

Guys, I just read on a general baseball message board that ESPNews is reporting that Giambi has a torn ligament in his wrist. ?!?
Is NESPN just engaging the latest installment of their Let’s Eff With Yankee Fans Who Are Trying To Enjoy Their Team’s Victory plan, or is something really amiss with Jason here?

  106. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

Gina: I read in the NYY site that Jason Giambi didn’t fly to Tampa. He’s back to New York. But they think that, resting him this weekend, everything’s going to be OK

  107. paul1040@aol.com

Gina, I think there is a good chance there is something seriously wrong with his wrist.

Giambi’s wrist has been bothering him for a while and his hitting has really been affected.

I would not be surprised if he is not around for the post season.

However, Sheff at 1B and Matsui at DH keeps Melky in the field. If Sheff does not work at 1B there are 3 other decent options in Phillips, Wilson, or Guiel.

  108. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

I found this in Yankees site. It’s the Boss who is talking:

“Winning the division title is very gratifying to me because it shows the total Yankee organization — on and off the field — demonstrating incredible guts, smarts and quality in the face of adversity and stiff competition.

“This is just the first step and I’m excited about playing hard to win the championship. I’m incredibly proud of every single member of the Yankee family.”

Now, I wonder: Is he referring to us???????????????

  109. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

Gina and Paul. This is what the article says about Giambino:
NEW YORK — Jason Giambi will be out of the lineup this weekend against the Devil Rays with his left wrist injury, and the first baseman may be forced to undergo surgery this winter if the problem doesn’t correct itself.

While his team traveled to Tampa on Wednesday night, Giambi returned to New York, where he was examined by hand specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser and team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon.

Giambi received an injection — his third in less than a month — and was told to sit out this weekend’s series in Tampa Bay. Giambi should be available to play next week when the Yankees return home.

So, let’s hope he’ll be ready for October. But the article also says this:

Giambi is hitting .163 with three home runs and nine RBIs in September, collecting just seven hits in 43 at-bats.

“He’s not swinging the bat well with this pain,” general manager Brian Cashman said.

So, we’ll have to wait. It’s anything guess how his wrist really is going on

  110. paul1040@aol.com

    Thanks, Jorge.

My point in my post is that it is not the end of the world if he is done for the season. I hope not, but the Yankees can still win it all.

  111. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

That good seasons ingredient list is somewhat compelling.

Is it true that the 11 secret herbs and spices in KFC is Good Seasons spices?

  112. yankeefan1@enter.net

Thanks, Jorge! I was just about to write that Mark had posted an article on Giambi within the hour.

There is something wrong in the article, though. Giambi’s stats are wrong. He has NO homers in September (none since 8/20) and I think only 3 rbi.

Thanks to Alex and Mark for the ALDS schedule…(not set in stone, but that’s what it looks like).

Just checked some stats, and I have some final touchups to do for my column for our fanclub newsletter…but if Giambi heals up somewhat and DHs, and Sheff and Matsui are in the lineup, then the ENTIRE LINEUP will consist of players with an OPS of .800 or higher. Wow. Even Matsui and Sheff (Sheff was .811 when he went down). Over .800 is good. About .750 is average. Bernie is .775 and Melky .767. Everyone over .800 is incredible.

    Back later maybe…busy!

  113. a24diun@yahoo.com

Thanks, Jorge and Paul, for the updates. I knew something was wrong w/his wrist but didn’t think it was anything that resting him couldn’t fix. I just freaked out when I heard the words “torn ligament”…I dont know too much about sports injuries but that sounded bad :\

I *really* hope he ends up being able to contribute in the postseason, not only cause his bat would be great for our offense, but b/c of how much I have admired his cojones and general fight in the recent past. I am thinking great things for the Yanks in the next month or so and I know it would crush him if he couldn’t be a part of them.

  114. marksman@ny-yankees.net

No they didn’t call later to give me a false sense of security. The **** thing is set to go off exactly at 7pm.

  115. a24diun@yahoo.com

Uh-oh, the page censored out a word that I didn’t think was bad, and now the **** in my post makes me look like a perv! :0
LOL I didn’t mean that I admired anything X-rated on him! Just his courage under fire and so forth.

  116. paul1040@aol.com

    Santana lost his last game.

He is the best pitcher in baseball this year I think but the Yankees have handled him in the past.

  117. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Santana just made 2 errors on one play.

It’s a well known fact that there is an automated messaging system that calls your home if you miss a class or the school day. He should have known better.

  118. paul1040@aol.com

    Does anyone speak Italian?

When I was looking for the cruet I came upon a jar of some food-type substance that someone brought me from Italy.

    The paper with it says:

    Azienda Agrituristica Biologica

    “Il Giardino di Iti”

    della Baronessa Bebe Cherubini

    C.da Amica Rossano Calabro (Cs)

    and then a phone #

That is just on the front of the card. Inside there is more. The only part I understand above is that it is an biological agricultural experiment.

  119. paul1040@aol.com

I went more than 6 years without missing a day of school.

Even in my corporate life over 12 years I missed 2 days, and those were both taken because I was traveling.

  120. btide21@aim.com

I missed like 14 days of school last year, 13 because of travel and 1 because I wouldn’t go to school on Thanksgiving.

  121. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Azienda is company so thats probably the name of who made it or its brand name.

What does it look like. Is it like a garden mix of vegetables or is like a spaghetti sauce?

  122. btide21@aim.com

Nope we don’t which makes sense but doesn’t at the same time considering Labor Day is a public holiday here.

  123. paul1040@aol.com

The food substance is a condiment of sorts.

    Inside it says

    Diavoleria

    CONDIMENTO UNIVERSALE

    Ingr: Peperoncino

    Aromi naturali

    Olio Extra vergine di Oliva

    Produtto lavorato rigorosamente senza conservanti

    _________________________

I think the ingredients are peppercorns, body odor, and extra virgin olive oil, and the words under it warn that rigormortis will set in soon after eating this.

  124. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

It might be like one of those dipping oils for warm bread. Italy is really big on those. Or it could be like those infused olive oils.

  125. btide21@aim.com

Paul I always used this as a rule of thumb: If I can’t read what’s on the label, I normally don’t eat/drink or set it on fire.

  126. paul1040@aol.com

This is on the back page of the card with the food substance:
    _____________________________

  127. paul1040@aol.com

Alex, I had not given thought to setting it on fire.

I think I received this from the same person who brought be something from Thailand.

  128. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

That was the LAST thing I expected, Alex. I want to see where they are going with that.. hopefully it was some kind of bizarre dream thing or something, lol.

  129. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

The plot thickens.. it was made with love .. something about traditions and prepared with attention.. lol

    Good eating!

  130. paul1040@aol.com

I went to Babel fish to translate and it came up with

There were some earthy women in the tub with them.

  134. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

The opportunity for the Twins to take 1st place is going away tonight. I thought that, with Santana on the hill, they would get it. I was wrong. Besides, if the Twins would win, they would eliminate Boston from the Wild Card Race. They will stay alive for one more day. A slow way to die 🙂 🙂 🙂

  135. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

hey all, off work. Yankees kick ***. I was giving high fives to random people on campus today with yankee gear and someone at the office said “hey everybody what’s the difference between fenway franks and yankee dogs?” “you don’t eat fenway franks in october” hahaha and i’ve heard it before and laughed anyway

  136. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Hi all.

I feel sorry for Mark. I just finished my monthly column for our fan club, and being a perfectionist, I must edit it 10 times before it goes out. Mark does this daily.

If anyone wants to see what I wrote, check out:

    http://www.lvyankeefanclub.com/columns/

I’m not as good as Mark, and you don’t have to agree with me, but I hope you like it!

PS. No cheating on the trivia question! Try to figure it out for yourself before scrolling down for the answer!

  137. yankeefan1@enter.net

Ortiz’ 2 hrs give him the Red Sox record for HR in a season. He now has 52. Jimmie Foxx hit 50 in his MVP season of 1938. Foxx hit 50 HR and drove in 175 runs that year. He was named MVP even though the Tigers’ Hank Greenberg had 58 hr.

But we all know who won the WS that year, don’t we???

  138. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

mike i got mcdowell but not kameniecki, my guess was key, but i guess he wasn’t on board till his clutch win in the 96 postseason. I remember mcdowell in game 5 as well, ruining my life at that time and ken griffey jr scoring on a martinez hit into th eleft field corner…i also remember joey cora cheating in games 3 and 4 by running out of the baseline on bunts to mattingly…that *******

  139. yankeefan1@enter.net

Key missed most of the 1995 season due to injury. Key was 18-6 in 1993 and 17-4 in the shortened 1994 season.

  140. Lola

*yawn* tonite is boring, no celebration..no Mikes, no doing the cabbage patch.
I miss being in college…i am tired of this grown business. Hey, for those of you in it, stay in college for as long as u like…the whole making $$ gets old after the first yr (grad’ed in 05). *yaaaaawwn*

  141. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

anytime mike….my one question. do you think by wang pitching games 1 and 5 that if he pitches 5, him not pitching until probably games 3 and 7 would be a major issue since both are on the road? I personally think i would pitch him in game 2 of the alds (esp if its against the tigers and not the twins) and have mussina or johnson pitch 1 and 3 so wang could have 2 and 6 or even 1 and 5 in the alcs

  142. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

lol lola i feel like my parents think the whole spending money for me to be here business will get old, i don’t know around may of 2009 so i don’t think i have a choice.

also, if we could win the alds in less than 5 that would be very sweet, then we don’t have to worry about when wang pitches…If we face the twins in the alds i pitch wang in game 2 and mussina game 1 with the understanding santana may beat us…if that happens at least we have our ace to tie the series and a better 3 starter to put us ahead 2-1 when they will prob use santana on short rest and either lose or force game 5 against mussina with an inferior pitcher….if its the tigers though, then i might use wang in game 1

  143. yankeefan1@enter.net

Well, if the Yanks advance to the ALCS like we hope they will, and the Yanks have the best record in the league like we hope they will (and the last I checked, the Tigers AND Twins were losing tonight…very good 🙂 ) Game 3 would be on the road, but Game 7 of the ALCS would be at Yankee Stadium.

  144. rob.bush@excite.com

Wang pitching in games 3 and 7 in the ALCS would only be an issue if the Yankees end up playing the Twins, I would think.

Nice column there Mike. Although I intended to read it and then go look up the answers to the Trivia, unfortunately, I started reading the answers before I realized it.

Eh, I took my time. Was in no hurry to graduate.

  148. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

Who are we expecting to be on the Twins’ postseason rotation? Johan Santana for sure, but who else? Brad “Bizarro Pavano” Radke? Matt Garza? Carlos Silva? Scott Baker?

The Twins might be able to squeak out 3 wins in the ALDS against another team, but if we face them in the ALCS, there is no way the other guys in that rotation can take the Yankees’ lineup down.

  149. yankeefan1@enter.net

Could be Boof Bonser. If the Twins face the Yanks, they could throw Baker. For some god-forsaken reason, the Yanks had trouble with him this year.

  150. Lola

LOL…ok, maybe dont stay in college for as long as u like :-p
5 yrs is good. i should know. but then again, i did engineering..and 3 minors.

anyway, vince, enroll in law school or something right after graduation. run away from the real world for as long as possible. i know this is bad advice, lol, i guess i am just tired.

  151. Thomas

Don’t be too carried away with ALCS. Having it start in the staium is a big bonus and plus, esp. if ALDS goes many games. Concentrate on ALDS first.

If Yanks face Twins, I’d put RJ in Game 1 facing Santana. Why? Mussina pitches as well on road as anyone on staff, and he can be relied along with Wang to win games 2 and 3. If it goes 5, then RJ will have to pitch, but that’s tradeoff and best not to go 5.

If Tigers, then yes, Wang and RJ. I would usually let Moose pitch game 3 since he is most consistent, even on road. Though RJ seems to pitch better on road too this year.

Just concentrate on getting home field first and the ALDS, before the ALCS. Santana looked a bit mortal today, which should be good news for all potential opponents. Yes, the Twins rotation is Santana and the three unknown Stooges, but Stooges can outsmart and put on quite show, esp. rookies against Yanks.

  152. yankeefan1@enter.net

Yup. 1st things 1st. There are 4 levels. Level 1 completed successfully. Make the playoffs. Level 2 is win the ALDS, 3 the ALCS and 4 the WS.

    One level at a time.

  153. rob.bush@excite.com

“Torn wrist ligament shelves Giambi; Pavano done”

Wow. I was totally shocked by that last part of the headline. Totally unprepared for that. Almost shat myself. Just, wow.

“Put it on the Board……….YES” White Sox DONE, history, losing 9-0 tonight, put a fork in them and the HAWK>>>>>>>>YES

  155. yankeefan1@enter.net

The Hawk. Kenny Harrelson. Picked up by Boston after Tony C. got beaned on 8/18/67. Didn’t do much in 1967 but had a good year in 1968. (Led league in RBI if I remember correctly). Also, if I remember correctly, he was the first to wear “batting” gloves.

  156. rob.bush@excite.com

Twinky starters in the games against the Yankees this year:

    Silva: 0-1, 4 IP, 6 R (4 earned), 1 BB, 4 K (9/1, Yankees 8-1)

    Baker: 2-0 12.0 IP, 2 R, 4 BB, 8K (4/14, Twins 5-1; 9/2, Twins 6-1)

    Garza: 0-1, 4.2 IP, 5 R, 4 BB, 2 K (9/3, Yankees 10-1)

    Santana: 0-0, 6.1 IP, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K (4/15, Twins 6-5)

    Radke: 0-1, 6 IP, 6 R, 1K (4/16, Yankees 9-3)

  157. yankeefan1@enter.net

    So true about the Hawk.

Anyone see the pix of Pavano’s girlfriend? …not only that, but the guy once dated Alyssa Milano?

    One Big…

    SHEESH!

  158. rob.bush@excite.com

Yankee starters in those games against the Twinkies were:

    4/14: Mussina (L)

4/15: Wright (no decision, Rivera lost, with a BS)

    4/16: Wang (W)

    9/1: Lidle (W)

9/2: Karstens (L) (rain shortened game, no 9th)

    9/3: Rasner (W)

  159. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

That’s right, I forgot about Boof Bonser. He’d probably be in there in Garza’s place against the Yankees, assuming the Yanks face the Twins again.

Keep in mind that the rookie thing doesn’t apply to EVERY rookie that faces the Yankees. Can we get some numbers here? I mean, I know that Adam Loewen owned us this year, but Adam Loewen does not equal every rookie pitcher. What about Jon Lester and Matt Garza?

Whoever can compile a total stat line of combined rookies’ pitching performances against the Yankees, that will do a great, great service to Yankees fans everywhere.

  160. rob.bush@excite.com

Why did I post all that info about the Twins and Yankees? My own curiosity, I wanted to see how the Twins had pitched against the Yankees this year. Other than Baker, their starters have not enjoyed much success. Even Santana gave up 4 runs in his only start against the Yankees. Granted, that was way back in April, but I’m still encouraged by it. What might have happened in that game if anybody but Wright was pitching against him? Who knows.

  161. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

The Twins info is much appreciated, Rob. It’s a good look at how the Yankees might expect to do in the playoffs against them.

  162. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Exactly. Although the games aren’t played on paper.. its good to know what kind of matchups and history is on your side, lol.

  163. gonyy27@yahoo.com

Hey everyone, just checking in before bed, I have a nasty cold.

I attended 2 Yanks-Twins games this year, and the Yankees won both (finale of both series). Wang looked very good against the Twins, but that was in April. Radke, who had a “promising” bullpen session today according to Twins radio, looked awful, but he did get off to a slow start. The Twins struggle more with finesse pitchers than power pitchers, I think. Moose and Wang are good draws, Wright is not. RJ is capable of beating anyone if he is on and I remember he dominated the Twins last year. Other Twins-Yanks notes:

-Sheffield once cranked a game tying homer vs. Joe Nathan, who proceeded to melt down afterwords. If he blows one he goes to pieces.

-Boof Bonser’s been quite good of late, but I have never seen him and have no clue what he’s like

-Morneau was the ******* who blew Mo’s save in April.

-before that, the Yanks had a somewhat dramatic rally vs. Santana. Despite the loss, Wang restored order the next day.

-Walking Mauer to get to Cuddyer and Morneau to get to Hunter has produced awful results for Twin opponents.

-Scouting report on Santana today: he could not locate his slider at all and his change up was mediocre, leaving him throwing a lot of fastballs. It was his shortest outing of the year. Boston’s lineup is similar to the Yankees in style, which bodes well.

-Twins fans are frightened of their starting rotation past their immortal, godly Santana.

    Night everyone.

  164. paul1040@aol.com

Hope you feel better soon, Karl.

If you saw the final game in both Yankee series with Minnesota this year you went to the April 16 game at the Homer Dome and the Sept 3 game in NY? I did not realize you got to Yankee Stadium. That must have been a great trip.

Yeah, I think the Yanks can beat the Twins. Oakland as I mentioned above (at 2:54 PM), detailing each game this year, really owns the Yankees this year winning 6 out of 9.

That is the team to worry about.

    Back to bed for me.

  165. yankeefan1@enter.net

A Florida paper reports that Joe Girardi will be fired at the end of the season. I would then expect the Cubs to fire Dusty Baker and hire Girardi. I think the Marlins are making a big mistake here.

Also, about 1000 fans walked out of an Orioles-Tigers game in Camden Yards last night to protest the Orioles direction and Angelos’ ownership. To that I ask, “What took you so long?”

  166. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

The O’s front office has been deceiving itself for years. They can’t just keep buying up mid-level veterans during the offseason in the hopes that they can compete. The worst part was that they didn’t even trade anyone at the deadline…they were lucky enough to get rid of Javy Lopez and Jeff Conine by through waivers. They’re going to have to go into a building mode, like the Devil Rays have. The sad part is that the O’s starting rotation has the potential to be really good, but for some reason Leo Mazzone was only able to work his magic on Erik Bedard. Maybe Nick Markakis, Adam Loewen, and Chris Ray can start some sort of youth movement to put that team back into contention someday.

I know I shouldn’t care about what happens to our rivals in the AL East, but it pains me to see what some front offices do to their fans.

Regarding Girardi, whatever team he’s on, I’m sure he will lead them to the playoffs too, as that seems to be the pattern with former Yankees bench coaches under Joe Torre’s tutelage. That should tell you something, shouldn’t it?

  167. yankeefan1@enter.net

A few things about Girardi and a possible future Cubs connection. He obviously played with the Cubs. He has an engineering degree from Northwestern. His father is in Illinois suffering from Alzheimer’s.

  168. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

I could be wrong, but I think I heard once that managing the Cubs is Girardi’s dream job. It would be great if he gets it.

  169. yankeefan1@enter.net

Tonight’s game is on UPN, but for those of you listening on the radio (or who want to listen to the radio)…Suzyn Waldman won’t be doing tonight’s game. She will be observing Rosh Hashannah.

Filling in for her will be the one and only…

    Constantino Martinez.

  170. a24diun@yahoo.com

Can’t wait to listen to Tino tonight! I have been counting down the hours since I woke up 🙂
Yankeefan, I liked your column and agree w/you about the O’s fan protest… I can’t believe they didn’t do it sooner and I think the way Angelos has come back at them and whined about how “he chooses to keep ticket prices low” is lame. I don’t buy it. Lots of teams have low ticket prices and it doesnt force them to be as bad as the O’s.

Also about Girardi, I’d be happy for him if he got the Cubs job, but Jeffrey Loria would be the biggest idiot EVER to let him go!

  171. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

It will be great to hear Tino’s perspective, especially since he played with a bunch of the guys on the team. I don’t know how he’ll do with Sterling’s Broadway references, though.

  172. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Actually, I like being hated…

or, as Jeter says in the commercial, “going on the road and having people booing us and hating us”

    It means you are WINNING!

I don’t want to be lovable like the Cubbies or the 1962 Amazing Mets.

  173. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

“2. Bandwagon Yankees fans: Even if they view winning titles as their birthright, I don’t (entirely) begrudge fans who have rooted for the team through thick and thin. (Valid reasons include that your dad rooted for the team, that you picked them at a young age, etc.) But the hordes of Yankees “fans” who have hopped aboard in the last decade make me nuts.”

I can’t speak about the Mets, but I can assure you that the Red Sox have a lot of bandwagon fans. It’s very cool and trendy to be a Red Sox fan in Boston right now, and I know a couple of people who became major fans in more recent years. I also know many die hards. The point is, any team that wins is going to have its share of bandwagon fans.

“4. When national media assume that all of New York roots for the Yankees”

How often have we heard that all of New England roots for the Red Sox? I can only roll my eyes when I hear that.

“5. The cult that has grown around average players that were part of the recent Yankees dynasty: … While legitimate superstars who somehow don’t qualify as “true Yankees” like A-Rod are pilloried, career mediocrities such as Scott Brosius and Luis Sojo are lionized because fans focus on the few clutch hits they contributed in their many postseason opportunities.”

We know that these players aren’t going to the Hall of Fame, but they were integral to the Yankees success. I think it’s better to recognize that than ignore it. We are fans of the team and have every right to celebrate our players.

“7. The myth of Yankees’ scouting and player development: Bronx Bombers fans like to talk about their “homegrown” stars, but in reality this is an outdated notion. Sure, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada get credited to the Yanks’ farm system, but none is younger than 32. Increasingly, what is billed as the Yanks’ drafting acumen is anything but. Rather, the Yanks excel in throwing money at players who aren’t subject to the draft at all, those from baseball-rich areas such as the Dominican Republic and Asia. The Yankees’ best current young players — Chien-Ming Wang, Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera — were all available to the highest bidder as amateurs. Gee, guess who that was?” Really? All we have heard for the last few years is how the Yankees have no prospects. And, maybe the team can (or is willing to) pay to sign young international stars, but some pan out and some don’t. Who else was talking about Wang before he reached 15 wins this year? Maybe the guys from 96 are in their 30s, but the point is that the team won with a core group from the system despite the accusations from everyone else that the Yankees only win becuase they buy their stars. Every team has a combination of players they got from trades, signed as free agents, and came up from the minors.

  174. paul1040@aol.com

Wow that guy is angry and bitter.

I would make sure he has no guns and keep him away from library towers.

Classic inferiority complex and he clearly is obsessed with sports.

Nothing wrong with being a Mets fan and rooting for your team. But he is determined to knock the Yankees.

    Sad.

  175. paul1040@aol.com

It is the epitome of hypocrisy for many baseball team owners to gripe about money when invariably they have more money than Steinbrenner and they do NOT invest it in their team.

Instead they pocket the spoils and whine incessantly.

  176. Lola

you know what notion i really despise? I hate when people make it seem like as if if you werent born to be a fan of this and that team, you are a bandwagon fan.
I mean, what kind of reasoning is this? Should i have to apologize that my family is more into soccer and mathematics and dont have the slightest clue about baseball?

I take offense to it when people say this because i started becoming a yankee fan at the age of 13 on my own when i went to my first baseball game with my church. So some idiot says to me that it was 96 when they were winning, so i am a bandwagon fan. Man, some people…

  177. yankeefan1@enter.net

A few years ago, one of the sportswriters for our local newspaper had some commentary where he criticized Yankee fans for being bandwagon jumpers. He always knocks New York fans and kisses Philly’s tush. Anyway, at this time, there was a “Reader’s Sound Off” portion of the newspaper. It isn’t there anymore.

Well, I wrote him and let him know that the first year I remembered rooting for the Yanks was 1967 at the age of five (I might have started beforehand, but don’t remember pre-1967). I then reminded this writer that the Yanks finished in 9th place that year out of 10 teams, so I was no bandwagon jumper. I then gave a list of players who were on the Yanks in 1967, as well as a rundown of the pennant races of 1967 and the 1967 All Star Game and World Series.

The guy didn’t reply at all. Not a peep. I heard from some people that knew the guy that I embarrassed the living you-know-what out of him. I also got a lot of “thank you’s” from a lot of Yankee fans.

  178. paul1040@aol.com

Yes, Libby the comment box would not load for several hours and the sign in link would constantly reappear.

I think it was a terrorist plot.

The following is from the MLB pregame notes but another Mark.

    Pitching matchup

    NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (17-6, 3.64 ERA)

The key for Wang is to keep the bases empty. He has an 0.84 ERA with the bases empty, but a 7.39 ERA when at least one runner is on base.

TB: RHP James Shields (6-7, 4.82 ERA)

Shields is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two starts against the Yankees this season.

Oops, BY another Mark. Mark Polishuk is an associate reporter for MLB.com.

the only thing that really bothers me that i can’t brush aside from that article is the september 11th one…..that man has no right whatsoever to claim ny wasn’t rooting for the yankees in the 2001 world series because I know as a fact the entire city was…..and pretty much everyone not on the west coast or in new england. That really really annoys me and I know firsthand that just because he is a jealous, arrogant ******* of a mets fan with blind hatred for the consistantly superior ny team, doesn’t mean more civilized mets fans were pulling for the yankees in 2001, much like yankee fans such as my parents pulled for the mets in 86.

  182. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

i didn’t mean the entire city, i meant most of it, and hte country… that ws wasn’t about a dynasty or baseball so much as it was about ny and the entire country rallying around something that was right int he world and american.

Torre will be resting people down the stretch to keep everyone fresh and minimize the chance of injury.

I’ve been trying to go on some other sites and am having trouble. Between the blog trouble and the slowness of getting on there, I want to scream. Not just my home computer, but also during my work breaks…

  187. sam13281328@aol.com

Paul, why are always such a smart ***? I just asked a question. If the answer is to rest people, they had an off day yesterday, so I am just wondering…….your a jerk

Mike, many sites have been slow today. Maybe there were Internet problems.

MLB has been slow as well as the log in issues earlier.

  190. paul1040@aol.com

Pete Abe’s Pavano info was interesting.

Sure he does not want to go to another organization, they might make him work. He is on the gravy train with the Yankees.

  191. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

The Pavano comments are especially interesting becuase Torre doesn’t often talk about his players like that.

  192. btide21@aim.com

Russ, Torre was quoted as saying he would rest half the lineup wednesday and half today so that everyone would get back to back days off.

  193. paul1040@aol.com

    Yeah, Libby, it was unusual.

Can you blame him? Enough already of this story. I hope he never pitches for the Yankees.

Not sure it will take much for that to happen since he will manage to avoid it the rest of his contract.

  194. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

Although, one could argue that Pavano isn’t one of his players because he has been on the DL for such a long time.

  195. a24diun@yahoo.com

Evening everybody! I am loving this Tino on WCBS thing immesurably already! 🙂
Almost makes up for not having YES to see Sheff at 1b. Keep me updated on how he’s looking!

at the end of the year i request somebody remember all of the inside jokes that take place in this family.

i can think of the following:

    1. the jorge puns

    2. andrew’s trunk

    3. nick green

    4. kasey

    5. cheese from the shaker

    6. long walks on the beach

    7. the trademark/registered symbols

  197. btide21@aim.com

Don’t forget all the other plites there have been Vince.
Did anyone else read about Pete Abe’s flite to Tampa?

  198. paul1040@aol.com

Most all of that stuff was totally spontaneous, Vince.

    Like the Nick Green stuff.

Some haggard dope told us to stop it so you know it continued and we all jumped on it and went with it for at least a few days.

  199. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

according to the michael kay, torre would be comfortable with wang pitching twice at home, and mussina in game 3.

  200. m4rk6@yahoo.com

To those who are watching the game, can you post comments on how Sheff is swinging, when he gets his turn to bat?

  201. paul1040@aol.com

Vince the FLITE PLITE is because Angel was complaining about someone misspelling ight words like tonight.

So we converted all ight words to ite.

  202. btide21@aim.com

Paul, on the gameday, if you look at the 404 foot marker to the right of center field there is a little square without a 4th side next to it…do you know what it’s for?

  203. paul1040@aol.com

Joking, Alex. No idea and I did not notice it until you pointed it out.

Drat. 2 innings, 20 pitches for Shields.

  204. btide21@aim.com

I was thinking about watching the first 5 innings or so (that’s all the tape could hold) of ALCS game 3 in 2003. It always gets me in the playoff spirit. And yes, I got the entire brawl on it. haha

  205. rwinslow@bigpond.net.au

Hello Family, How are all the heads?? I have already ordered my t-shirt from MLB, it cost me a small fortune ($40 american) to have it psoted form the US, but hey it was worth it!!!! I celebrated with Pizza and Coke!!!

  206. paul1040@aol.com

Mark, thanks for those You Tube links. I am watching them also as well as Game Day and listening to the radio.

    YAAAAY ROBBIE!

  207. a24diun@yahoo.com

Tino on the youngsters: “I think these guys have a lot better swing than I ever had.” Awwwwwwwwwwww!!! 😀

  208. rob.bush@excite.com

I just looked at the line up and noticed we are still going with a lot of “B” team guys. No A-Rod. No Abreu. No Damon.

  209. a24diun@yahoo.com

I always would have taken Guiel on our postseason roster over Wilson but now he is really making his case. Steal and heads-up baserunning…it’s the little things!

  210. yankeefan1@enter.net

I don’t think Guiel will make it because there are already enough lefty bats on the team. That’s one reason they will probably go with Wilson or Phillips.

  211. paul1040@aol.com

Egad, I hope Bernie is not in center in the playoffs.

Bernie is an all time great but he no longer can play that position.

  212. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

i would venture to guess matsui and damon will never miss the same playoff game/be pulled unless its a blow out

  213. a24diun@yahoo.com

//That’s one reason they will probably go with Wilson or Phillips.//
This sentence gave me eerie flashbacks of the 90s pop duo Wilson Phillips…eeek. 🙂

If it comes down to a righty, I will take Phillips over Wilson any day of the week. Wilson hasnt impressed me in the slightest. But I definitely think Guiel is easily the best overall player out of all of them.

  214. paul1040@aol.com

Tampa showed absolutely no respect on Bernie’s arm. Other teams will know that also.

    Too much of a liability.

  215. rob.bush@excite.com

Well, at least I got to see about an inning. My wife is making me take her out to dinner tonight. Dang women that don’t understand the Yankee obsession…..

  216. paul1040@aol.com

I like Phillips and he has heart I think. Wilson has not impressed me at all. he strikes out in so many important situations.

  217. yankeefan1@enter.net

I don’t have Gameday up. Now that Cano has 2 hits, I know he is up on Derek. What is the latest on Mauer, Cano and Derek?

  218. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

i think cano might be some sort of super human, I haven’t seen a guy get pure hits like this in a really long time….reminds me of gwynn sort of

  219. paul1040@aol.com

Rob make her decide what she wants on the way so there is no delay in the drive through so you can get back home quickly.

  220. paul1040@aol.com

    Tony Gwynn, good thought, Vince.

    Yeah, Robbie is terrific.

I argued earlier in the year on the Newsday blog with people demanding he be traded for pitching.

  221. a24diun@yahoo.com

My latest argument about Cano has been with people who say he is only the 3rd or 4th best 2b in the MLB. *rolls eyes* With the possible exception of Chase Utley who could possibly be described as a better 2b than Cano?

  222. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

they are the same people who demanded melky be traded at the deadline….they will suffer when they see melky’s ultimate power as well

  223. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

well u know loretta is fundamental and hits in the worst lineup ever even with god behind him and makes all routine plays routinely so he is obviously better.

    TOTALLY KIDDING

  224. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

yeah i think with soriano in left now i would say utley at the moment is the best and then cano…belliard used to be, kent used to be, that guy on the whitesox maybe is almost as good…..id rank cano 2nd

  225. a24diun@yahoo.com

****! Thankfully no one has been dense enough to argue for Loretta but I have heard Brian Roberts, Dan Uggla and–get ready to laugh–Placido Polanco.

  226. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

those guys ar eall good and maybe uggla will end up being better than cano but i doubt it, i mean cano in florida might bat 360, people hate to admit it, but just like yankee players get more media, they also deserve more since they play through all the media both good and bad…..cano plays on a harder stage than everybody else except loretta, but he is better than loretta and more valuable to hsi team and his ceiling is higher and he is younger….roberts is a good player but he has really only had an all star half a season and that was the beginning of last year.

  227. yankeefan1@enter.net

Yeah, I like Iguchi. Vidro isn’t bad either, but guys like Kent and Biggio are up in age and of course have been playing other positions. Brian Roberts is a good one, too.

  228. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

im very impressed with shefs eye just like i was with matsui’s off injury, esp considering shef hasn’t had rehab….u can tell with his timing that he has missed a lot of time though

  229. a24diun@yahoo.com

I would give the edge to Cano over Uggla–while they may be close now, Cano gets to improve under the tutelage of the best hitting coach on the planet, and Uggla doesn’t. 🙂

Roberts is great but I think he has already put up his best numbers.

  230. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Guiel makes a case…

isn’t one of our bloggers there tonight???

    Another inning from Wang…maybe Bruney….

and then the return of MO.

  231. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

lol mattingly and ron jackson are pretty freaken even, i thnik mattingly has more to work with and that is the only time i will bring up that excuse cause its true…i agree on roberts though

  232. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

haha alex, of course we had wawa…wawa is everywhere in nj, esp by beaches……we had two wawa’s within 15 minutes of my house

  233. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

Hi everybody. Just in time to see by Gameday Guiel homered and we are winning!!!! Happy to find Sheff at 1st base. And impressed with Robbie. He has a real chance to win it. (Sorry DJ)

  234. m4rk6@yahoo.com

Laugh. I just found out the game was being shown on ESPN Asia. Its supposed to be live, but gameday is about a pitch ahead. Sad, sad cable tv for asia.

  235. btide21@aim.com

Oh that’s good to hear. I’m kinda split on whether I want Wawa to expand throughout the northeast or just stay local in the mid-atlantic states.

  236. a24diun@yahoo.com

Is Wawa supposed to expand BT? I didn’t know that!
They used to have one in North Jersey..Carlstadt, near Giants Stadium, but it turned into a Pantry1 about 5 years ago.

  237. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

i like it locally i think, that way i don’t have some dope from massachusetts asking me if i have ever been there and telling me how clutch it is drunk on a friday night at 3am to get a slushy…is wawa in pa too?

  238. btide21@aim.com

I don’t know to tell you the truth Gina…Jorge, Wawa is a 24 hour convienent store and some of them also sell gas…the ones that sell gas are called Super Wawa’s…it’s similar to a 7/11, I don’t know if you’ve heard of 7/11 or not.

  239. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

all i know is it started in nj, i had no idea it has already gone to other states….wawa gas also tends to be orgasmically cheap too…like i mean a good 3-5 cents cheaper than any competitor.

  240. gonyy27@yahoo.com

Much better, Paul, thanks. Well enough to go to school today, unfortunately. It’s been pouring here in MN all day and my school’s roof was leaking.

  241. btide21@aim.com

If Mauer stays at 1-3 his average actually goes down from what it was entering today…that’s when you know you’re a good hitter.

  242. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

    Alex:
Of course I’ve heard about 7 Eleven. In fact, there is one just 3 blocks from my home. I have no idea how many 7 Elevens are here in Mérida, Yucatán. But I’m sure we’re talking about much more than 40

  243. yankeefan1@enter.net

A leadoff hr, but after that, no runs. Wang super. This is what we want to see in 10 days or so.

Where’s his # 1 fan on this blog?

He’s only at 80 pitches or so. He can go the 8th and turn it over to Mo with no middle man.

  244. yankeefan1@enter.net

Ha ha. Funny, Alex. How to really know you are a good hitter (Ted Williams, 1941, .406) Go 2 for 5 and see your average go down. LOL

  245. a24diun@yahoo.com

Wang has definitely become much more economical as this game has progressed.
Altho I thought I read in Pete’s blog that Joe had said he wouldnt let any of the starters go longer than 5 innings after we clinched..I guess he changed his mind?

I’m thinking Bruney in the 8th, MO 9th?

  246. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

    Mike:
I’m sure Ashley took the plane to Tampa. She is hiding in Busch Gardens, just to kidnap Wang for the weekend

  247. btide21@aim.com

Oh ok Jorge, I didn’t know that 7/11 had spread outside the US but that’s good to hear…Wawa is basically 7/11 except a little more modern.

  248. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

omg jorge yucatan? (sorry i can’t do the accent thing)….we learned about yucatan baby deliveries in anthropology class…..and legalized prostitution, but not necessarily in yucatan….interesting stuff

  249. gonyy27@yahoo.com

Yes, I went to New York earlier this month for the first time. It was coincidence the Yankees played the Twins then. It was definately one of the most fun experiences ever. The atmosphere in New York is unbelievable.

MVP DJ! (I got to chant that in NY!)

  250. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

Prostitution is not legalized here in Yucatán. It is banned (is this the “rite” word?) since an uncle of mine was the Governor. I’m talking about 1970. But, of course, prostitution still exist her, like in the whole world

  251. a24diun@yahoo.com

God I love Tino. He has kept it real so eloquently on ESPN this year in the face of the virus that is John Kruk.
I still wish he’d quit NESPN and move to YES though!

  252. paul1040@aol.com

Funny, there were very few 7-11s here in Massachusetts but then then bought the dominant chain, Christy’s.

The former owner of Christy’s is now running as an independent for governor.

  253. gonyy27@yahoo.com

There used to be a 7/11 in the building next to my house before I moved here, but it is a dentist’s office now. There are no 7/11s that I know of in Duluth, but I have been to them before.

  254. m4rk6@yahoo.com

    Hi Alex, name’s Mark.
Gotta give Cannizaro an A for effort tho.

Wonder why Jeter didn’t test Crawford’s arm on the fly out.

  255. a24diun@yahoo.com

Paul for some reason that reminded me of this natural fast-food chain that I love that is only in New England.. do you know what I’m talking about by any chance? There are some in MA & ME.

  256. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

jorge, yeah two seperate things we discussed (my teacher spent a year observing in mexico then wrote books on it) she studied pregnancy in yucatan and the process and cultural aspects of delivering babies and also studied prostitution in the southernmost tip of mexico….she lived in the brothel and everything

  257. yankeefan1@enter.net

KC has tied Det. Twins and white sox losing.

Is it time to play taps for the defending champs? Appears so. I heard Ozzie went off last night again.

  258. a24diun@yahoo.com

Wow, Proctor already got 2 outs before I could type out my sentence complaining that he should be resting. LOL perhaps I spoke too soon!

  259. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

Sorry Vince. Have to ask what does “brothel” mean? And another question, what do you mean by “delivering babies”?

  260. btide21@aim.com

There’s a rest stop in north Jeresey on the Garden state Parkway that I’ve been to countless times…brings back memories.

  261. a24diun@yahoo.com

    Well ya know….quasi-natural 🙂
The lesser of the evils, kind of like the In-N-Out Burger in Cali. Very anti-corporate, pro-quality, that kind of thing. Now I am gonna drive myself crazy trying to remember the name..

  262. btide21@aim.com

Pitcher Change: Ruddy Lugo replaces Scott Proctor.

Well either Gameday is losing it or the Yankees just aquired Ruddy Lugo from Tampa mid-game…haha.

  263. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

brothel is a house where prostitutes live together and are taken care of by doctors, at least when prostitution is legalized there are doctors there too supplied by the government…..when i say delivering babies i mean that apparently, and again, you would prob know better than me, this is just what we read, apparently in yucatan they use hammocks and deliver the baby when the woman is often times squatting…in addition the husband is in the room to hold the wife and the midwives deliver the baby and give all sorts of massages

  264. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

in and out burger is soooooo good so is carls jr but not as good….au bon pain is served at my school, that is also good, though i prefer things like atlanta bread company. Panera dominates nj but i like atlanta bread company more.

  265. btide21@aim.com

Au Ban Pain…that’s a blast from the past, I always used to get the Mocha coffee drink when I was little and my Dad took me and my bro into Philly to work with him.

  266. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

if anybody ever finds themselves in a lower middle class area like hamden connecticut, i highly suggest finding ray and mikes. It makes absolutely amazing sandwiches. I had a giant pastrami sub from there today.

  267. paul1040@aol.com

It was really funny to see Joe Torre interviewed in the Division Championship celebration with Mo by him and Joe say “We did it without you” to Mo.

    And then, “But no longer.”

    I laughed out loud.

  268. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

It’s clear now, Vince. But, PLEASE, do not think that’s the way women deliver their babies here in Yucatán. Of course it happens the way you’re saying, but just in the very little towns. Not in the cities. I swear to you that I was borned in a Hospital, with doctors and nurses helping my mom, and with my father outside smoking an entire box of Marlboro.

  269. yankeefan1@enter.net

Don’t worry about the leadoff single. The first two pitches were swings and misses. He broke the bat on the single. A blooper.

Jorge had to go to the dugout. The batter came around on the backswing and got Jorge on the side of the head/

  270. a24diun@yahoo.com

That is the better way to go Paul. Here in Philly w/o a car there is sometimes no choice but fast food…even though I’ve read Fast Food Nation and ummm, yuck.

  271. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

oh, of course jorge. lol we weren’t judging yucatan or anything and didn’t necessarily consider it a bad thing the way they deliver babies, just something different from the US that was a cultural change…..my teahcer seems to prefer the small town yucatan method…she is a strong believer in birth being a “natural process”. I was a breech AND a C section so i’m thankful to be born in a hospital

  272. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

    Pitch 1 – In play, out(s) recorded

Delmon Young flies out to right fielder Aaron Guiel.

That’s in Gameday about 15 minutes ago. It should be a hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh fly ball. But, wait, isn’t there a roof at Tropicana Field? at least, that’s what I remember

  273. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

YYYAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY Save # 34 for Mo and he is looking excellent!
    Win #18 for Wang!

    Ballgame over, Yankees win!

    TTHHHHEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!!! 😀

  275. yankeefan1@enter.net

For those not able to watch….

Mo looked great. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow, but he had great velocity. He was smokin’…. looking very good. Mo says on postgame he feels good.

  276. gonyy27@yahoo.com

MO K’S THE SIDE! YANKESS WIIN!

    Posted by: gonyy27@yahoo.com | September 22, 2006 09:32 PM

wow, I used to win spelling bees? Scary.

And they finished in time for me to go and have a social life. Thank you, Yankees! Bye everyone1

  277. yankeefan1@enter.net

Well, I’ll be back later. Wang ties Santana for the MAJOR LEAGUE lead in wins.

    18-6, 3.58.

    Ashley must be happy.

    Be back later.

  278. a24diun@yahoo.com

Yay, short game, and now I can actually pretend to go be in the best years of my life and go out! LOL
Nite everyone!! Great broadcast from Tino, great W for Wang, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, fantasmal RETURN BY THE ONE AND ONLY!!!

  279. btide21@aim.com

I kinda feel sorry for Wigginton, first Chacon breaks his hand then he gets hit by a flamethrowing Mariano Rivera.

  280. rwinslow@bigpond.net.au

Hey, did we win?? Stupid Gameday!!! Alex we have 7/11 in Australia and we are now getting Starbucks and Krispy Kreme.

  281. rwinslow@bigpond.net.au

The 1st of September was our 1st day of Spring, it has been so warm here it is like it’s the beginning of Summer. The last few days it has been in the mid 20s-30s on the east coast (that’s celsius)
Wow, go Wang and it’s great that Mo is back. Hi Jorge.

  282. btide21@aim.com

Oh ok that’s a little different then how we do it in the northern hemisphere haha. Normally the first day of a season is between the 20-23 up here haha.

  283. yu_13@yahoo.com

Hi everyone, first time posting, this is Chao from Taiwan.

Good to see the Yankees in the playoff, and Wang got his 18th win, ties Chan-Ho Park for season wins record of an Asian pitcher.

Wang is phenomenal in Taiwan, and in NL we also have the Dodger Hong-Chih Kuo, different type of pitchers but both exciting to watch. Because of the time zone we have games in the late night and early morning, but we couldn’t miss any of it. In Taiwan everyone talks about Wang now, and if he starts game 1 in ALDS it’ll make headline here.

It’s great to know the Yankees fan all love him(one especially)and I hope he can help the Yankees for another World Series title.

Btw, ask Wang about 7-11, he’ll tell you that we have about 4,000 stores in Taiwan. Unbelievable but true.

  284. rob.bush@excite.com

First McDonalds. Then 7-11. Now Starbucks and Krispy Kreme?

Gee, maybe the U.S. IS trying to take over the world.

Great game, it seems. Too bad I missed most of it, but sometimes you have to make the wife happy. And no drive-thru, for whoever made that comment. lol

Also went and saw Invincible, the movie about Vince Papale with Mark Wahlberg. Pretty good, even if I’m not an Eagles fan.

  285. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Hi guys, just got back in. Looking over the recap, it looks as if Wang once again came through for the fantasy team and it’s good to see us still winning after we clinched, even with the C-squad.

Looks like Guiel won us 2 games this year. One against Texas, one tonight.

  286. m4rk6@yahoo.com

I was wondering why the game went by so fast, then I realized Damon, Giambi and Abreu weren’t in it. Those guys sure eat up a lot of pitches.

Just curious, we all know who comprises the A Team, who do you take out to make it a B Team and then a C team.

Yes, I’m bored, can’t sleep (insomnia) and I’ve got nothing to do.

  287. btide21@aim.com

Did anyone know in Johnson’s last Regular Season start last year that he threw 123 pitches? Maybe that’s why he was so bad in game 3 against the Angels.

  288. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

I’m a little worried about Farnsworth. He can be lights out, but his back is an issue. The team might need him mire than one inning every other day in the playoffs. I’m worried that he will pull a David Wells.

  289. rob.bush@excite.com

It’s a Saturday. I’ve already installed my new security door and changed all the locks in my house. And game time is still 4 hours away. Why couldn’t it have been a day game today?

  290. ataustin@aol.com

Missed the last couple of days, and after reading off-day posts I’m less worried about boredom in the off-season than I was before. I think we have the potential to be quite entertaining. Maybe MLB.com will give us our own virtual-reality series.

Alex, am I too late to be soaked with champagne? I’ll bet you’ve still a virtual bottle or two around.

It looks like Sheff is having no trouble making the transition to 1st. Mo back, time to get Giambi some rest, clubhouse seems to be all pulling together, it’s all good!

  291. btide21@aim.com

Here are my bold predictions for the remaining races that will most likely go down to the wire:
    Twins win AL Central

    Tigers win AL Wild Card

    Padres win NL West

    Phillies win NL Wild Card.

  292. rob.bush@excite.com

    “Twins win AL Central”
    Posted by: btide21@aim.com | September 23, 2006 03:27 PM

The only reason they might not is the fact that the Tigers still have a bunch of games left against the Royals.

  293. ataustin@aol.com

Interesting comments from Joe about Pavano. Is he trying to measure the teams feeling towards him?

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I’m not sure I’ve given up on Pavano yet. I know it’s easy to pile on his injury problems, and I’ve done my share because it does seem ridiculous that one guy could have so many different problems.

But remember spring training? He was pitching pretty well, he seemed to be working hard to get back into the rotation, then he hurt himself hustling to make a fielding play. The fact that it was his butt that he hurt made it seem a bit silly. But once a pitcher hurts his leg or back they often hurt their shoulder because it changes their mechanics.

Then the whole thing with the accident. We all make fun of his “hangnail” type injuries, but he actually tried to pitch through broken ribs because he wanted to come back. Not telling the team was stupid, but I don’t think it was because he’s soft.

I guess I’m just not convinced the injuries were due to malingering, in fact I think some were due to trying to came back too fast. I know he’ll have to prove himself to his teammates, but I hope he gets the chance to next year.

  294. rob.bush@excite.com

I wasn’t disagreeing with you, Alex, I was just saying that the schedule may help out Detroit. There is no guarantee the Tigers will beat the Royals though.

I hope the Twins pass Detroit, since I’d much rather face them in a 7 game series.

  295. btide21@aim.com

I didn’t think that you were Rob, haha. But yeah you made a good point…It’ll be interesting to see if the Royals can really play spoiler effectively.

  296. rob.bush@excite.com

I just went back and got caught up on Pete Abe’s blog. I hadn’t read it for a few days. I absolutely LOVED that quote from Farnsy about the S*x coming in the next day.

  297. rob.bush@excite.com

    Bottom 6TH B:1 S:1 O:1
Troy Glaus reaches on force attempt, throwing error by third baseman Mike Lowell. Lyle Overbay to 2nd.

    jejejejejejejejejejejejeejejejejeejejejejejeejejjeje.

  298. rob.bush@excite.com

Kaylee, the way Detroit is handling KC right now, I’d say your prediction about them winning the division is correct. 6-0. Still top of the first.

  299. rob.bush@excite.com

I am encouraged by that Walk by Sheff. It means he is seeing the ball well.

Unless Howell was just way off on his pitches. lol.

Great hit by Cano. Crappy luck for Hideki.

  300. a24diun@yahoo.com

    Hi everyone–disappointing DP :\

But Cano up to .342 on GameDay! Today I was reading some FOXSports reporter who scoffed that he wouldn’t have the plate appearances to qualify…he’ll show them!! 😀

  301. gonyy27@yahoo.com

    Hey everyone.

My attention is split between this game and the Twins, who are in a close contest with the O’s.

  302. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

if we get this johnson for the playoffs, than does anybody wanna meet up at the ticker tape parade? haha its easy only have to find someone uve never seen in front of 2 million people

  303. gonyy27@yahoo.com

I’d love to go to a ticker-tape parade at some point during the Yankees’ many championships during my life.

I’m gonna go eat, be back later

  304. yankeefan1@enter.net

Cano may bat leadoff for the last game or two of the season in order to get him an extra plate appearance or two.

In 1971, Bobby Murcer hit .331 and finished 2nd to Tony Oliva’s .337. I remember that Murcer needed a huge game on the season’s last day, somthing like a 5 for 5 or something like that. Manager Ralph Houk batted him leadoff.

  305. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

i went to all 4 ticker tape parades in my existance and in fact was at the redsox inferior parade as well by pure coincidance

  306. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

meh two squeakers in the 5.5 hole i don’t knwo if i’d consider this falling apart…then baldelli hit it hard but he has hit everybody hard

  307. ataustin@aol.com

Andrew, didn’t we ask you to take care of Baldelli? Did you miss him, or did he get away? Or is it getting too crowded in your trunk?

  308. ataustin@aol.com

There have been some rumors that he tips his pitches from the stretch. It’s been an ongoing concern. A couple of times this year they’ve shown Posada talking with Randy, showing him how he’s tipping them.

  309. rob.bush@excite.com

I bet Andrew’s mother went shopping, opened her trunk to put in the groceries, and found Baldelli in there. Having no where else to put her food, she let him go.

  310. a24diun@yahoo.com

Ohh okay…well hopefully tonight they can turn on enough offense to make him HOWL miserably when we chase him from the game! 🙂

  311. paul1040@aol.com

In Andrew’s trunk they founnd Baldelli, Ortiz, Manny, Johann Santana, Liriano, Youklis, his principal, 7 members of the school board, and Elvis.

  312. rob.bush@excite.com

What is the deal with horrible teams going all batting practice on RJ?

And horrible pitchers going all Cy Young on the Yankees?

  313. sam13281328@aol.com

RJ being RJ. Seriously, only reason he is sniffing to get 18 wins is becuase he gets 6 runs a game for support. Overall, he hasn’t been impressive at all this year. ERA just went to 5 again. UGH…another game were he is going to give up 5 plus runs!!! Correction, ERA 4.98 as I type this…..sorry

  314. a24diun@yahoo.com

//And horrible pitchers going all Cy Young on the Yankees?//

LOL that is why I’m not worried about facing good pitchers in the playoffs…Yanks hit good pitchers better than bad ones!!

  315. rob.bush@excite.com

To be fair to RJ, he has given up 3 runs through 4 innings. Let’s say he goes two more innings and doesn’t give up any. That would be a 4.50 ERA. Acceptable.

Problem is, no run support so far in this game.

  316. ataustin@aol.com

    From Yankees notes:

With his 200th hit of the season Friday night, Derek Jeter joined Lou Gehrig as the only two Yankees in history to have four or more 200-hit years. Jeter now has five.

Um, doesn’t that mean Jeter joined Gehrig LAST SEASON as the only Yankees with four or more 200-hit years? d:|

  317. rob.bush@excite.com

Sterling just mentioned that Howell is throwing good off-speed pitches. Aren’t the off-speed guys the ones that the Yankee lineup has struggled most with this year?

  318. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

ps fun jeter fact: derek jeter is the only shortstop to ever have 5 200 hit seasons….no other shortstop in major league history has 4

  319. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

basehitting wise yes probably. I would think a rod is the best offensive ss ever if u consider him ****…or else tejada will be

  320. gonyy27@yahoo.com

I think Honus Wagner would give DJ a push for that, but by the time Derek’s career is over, it’s possible. If A-Rod had never switched, he would be by now.
Good play by Sheff on a foul ball there.

  321. ataustin@aol.com

And for every stat there’s 3 people to analyze it, 8 people to spin it, and everyone else to tell those 8 they were wrong.

  322. yankeefan1@enter.net

Missed pregame and the beginning of the show. Did they say anything on the pregame about how Mo felt today?

  323. rob.bush@excite.com

Now RJ has not excuse for this loss. 3 runs he can say no run support. 5 runs…well, you can’t expect the offense to bail you out all the time.

  324. yankeefan1@enter.net

Off night, but RJ showing why I only want him starting one game in the ALDS.

ERA up to 5.01. What’s the odds on him being over/under 5.00?

Proctor in dugout. Was kidnapped so he would not be used.

  325. yankeefan1@enter.net

Thanks, Alex. Had to volunteer for Miracle League so I missed pregame and the first few innings.

Glad to hear Mo feels great. That is a very good sign.

  326. btide21@aim.com

Many wondered how Mariano Rivera would feel the day after he pitched for the first time in more than three weeks. Everyone, in fact, except Rivera.
“I knew right away by how I felt [after the game],” the Yankees closer said. “I feel normal, and it makes me feel great.”

There’s the excerpt from the article Mike.

    I hate grading papers. Grrrrrrrr.

But I can’t trust my student aid to grade this particular assignment.

At least I have a student aid this year upon whom I can pass off work.

  328. btide21@aim.com

I think the Yankees are having a competition to see who can humiliate themselves the most against the below average Royals reject pitcher.

  329. m4rk6@yahoo.com

Yeah. I already turned off the tv. It was getting painful to watch. But, like Joe said, their best days followed their worst days.

  330. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Well, that’s over with.

    Cano .339; Jeter .338

    RJ 17-11, 5.00

Been saying for a month that I want Wang in 1 and 5. Still believe it.

  331. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Randy’s last 3 starts.

    Tonight 6 IP, 5 R

    Last one 5 2/3, 5 R

    One before that 6 IP 5 R.

    Ouch 17 innings, 15 R.

I definitely don’t want him going twice. Here is hoping he can crank it up for one good ALDS outing.

Come on, Randy….we need you now.

  332. rob.bush@excite.com

It’s not so much that the Yankees lost that has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. It’s HOW they lost. Yuck.

Of course, it should not be a surprise. The only crappy pitchers they can hit are the one’s with a 108.00 ERA. And they didn’t even do that very well.

  333. siege17@hotmail.com

***Has anyone else bought their playoff tickets yet?***

Divisional series tickets aren’t too expensive yet.

  334. rob.bush@excite.com

Unfortunately, it’s not the cost of the tickets that is keeping from buying. It’s the cost of the airplane ticket. Not to mention the difficulty of getting time off from work.

  335. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Rob let’s get Mark to help us poor fans go to a playoff game. We can get a private suite just for the blog family followed by a chance to meet the players in the clubhouse after. We can get wasted with them if they win a series too.

  336. rob.bush@excite.com

Speaking of Mark, I wonder if it was as painful for him to watch today’s game as it was for us?

    Probably worse.

  337. Lola

****! i caught the encore game of last night, and we really ******! ha ha.
lets hope RJ is just tryna sike us, and scare us a bit…you know, just for the drama factor, and his postseason will be solid.

  338. marksman@ny-yankees.net

It’s games like these that really worry me. Sure we have the occasional blowouts/shutouts that go our way but then every so often we get on the wrong end and the team looks completely incompetent. Can’t have that in the playoffs.

  339. sam13281328@aol.com

Lola, I know ALDS doesn’t have a game 6, so that is perfect spot for RJ to pitch….meaning if he pitches like last 3 games, I don’t want him to pitch at all

  340. btide21@aim.com

    Today’s lineup according to FOXSports.com:

    Damon CF

    Jeter SS

    Abreu RF

    Rodriguez 3B

    Sheffield 1B

    Cano 2B

    Matsui DH

    Posada C

    Guiel LF

  341. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Can you answer me something, Sam?

I see you going on and on about Randy, and I didnt see one bit of the game yesterday – and his ending line does not look good. BUT the guy would have had to pitch a complete game shutout to have had a chance at even walking away with a no decision! How did the offensive lineup they played yesterday not manage to score one single solitary run? That is more of a concern as far as I can see. The *b players* managed to score more the day before.

  342. m4rk6@yahoo.com

Angel, I think you have to give credit to Howell. He kept the hitters off balance, he mixed his pitches very well, his command was incredible. The Yankees couldn’t sit on any one pitch, he just confused the **** outta them.
Hope the Yankees don’t face a ‘Moyer-type’ pitcher in the playoffs.

  343. marksman@ny-yankees.net

I’m just hoping that they were having an off-day or that they just weren’t trying that leave it at that.

  344. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

See, I didnt see the game, so I dont know how Howell pitched. I have to admit when I heard the score on the radio that I thought they must have been resting players – and was surprised when I saw that wasn’t really the case. Yankee fans that rant and rave about had bad our players are (read – Sam) rarely seem to give credit to an opposing pitcher being effective. I still think its a bit of a worry, that our hitters have so many of these pitchers that they seem unable to hit. Like you, I hope we dont face any of them in the playoffs. 🙂

  345. a24diun@yahoo.com

Well disappointing game last night. That was almost asbad as losing to Adam Loewen.
I am concerened like some of you that Randy hasnt really had his stuff the past 3 starts (hey, we can still send Gator out there in his place in ALDS!) and it especially bugs me out b/c he is not known for pitching great in divisional play anyway. However it is not ALL Randy’s fault, our offense definitely shares some of the blame. They have got to stop getting fooled on this off-speed stuff from mediocre pitchers they rarely see.

Anyway, it’s all good because something tells me my man Moose wants to dominate today 😀 I couldn’t be happier that he is our Game 3 pitcher!

  346. a24diun@yahoo.com

Oh and speaking of Moyer, the Phightin Phillies currently hold the NL wildcard LEAD!!
Here’s hoping they hold onto it for the rest of the season, never deigning to sniff 2nd place again! Even if you’re not a Phils fan root for em just to spite the Mets!! 🙂

  347. paul1040@aol.com

Out of 16 games this year against the Rays the Yankees are 12-4. Johnson lost 2 of those games. The other 2 were lost in relief.

  348. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

lol, maybe we need Kevin Brown back, the only team he could beat with us was the Devil Rays, lol.

    Just kidding!

  349. m4rk6@yahoo.com

Baldelli seems to be finding his power stroke late in the season. And that ***** cause I dropped him from my fantasy roster.
It also ***** because he seems to like Yankee pitchers a lot.

Baldelli seems to be finding his power stroke late in the season. And that ***** cause I dropped him from my fantasy roster.

  351. paul1040@aol.com

    From the pregame preview:

Mussina is 16-5 in 26 career starts against Tampa Bay, with a 3.24 ERA.

    ________________

But the Rays are going with a rookie but he did face them before and game up 5 runs in 2.2 innings.

I am using the flite of a keight to attract the lite-ning to illumin-eight so the spider sees he has the site of his plite that he has a fite which he will not win.

  353. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Hmm, ever have Tabasco with original flavored Pringles? I just saw the Tabasco bottle sitting next to the Pringles can so I decided to try it. Not bad.

  354. a24diun@yahoo.com

Great start for my hubby, 10 pitches 9 strikes in the first. He wants to make us all smile and look forward to Game 3 today!

  355. marksman@ny-yankees.net

My tongue is burning. It’s already been punished by the burrito I had at Chipotle yesterday that I had loaded with salsa and Tabasco sauce.

  356. paul1040@aol.com

In Nawlins I had shrimp cocktail and the red sauce was mostly Tabasco.

It was so hot I thought my mouth had been seered off and I ate my napkin after drinking 15 glasses of water.

  357. a24diun@yahoo.com

//Cano didn’t even have to swing the bat, he just went straight to first base.//

LOL why make him swing the bat, when they know he will get a hit anyway? 😀

Yanks on the board 1-0!! Yay for giving Moose run support!

  358. a24diun@yahoo.com

BTW, to whomever wondered why Posada was catching again after night game, they said on WCBS that Posada wanted to catch Moose today..can’t blame him I want to catch Moose too lol 🙂
Smart move though…get on same page for playoffs.

  359. Lola

Except for the right handed batters the Yankees have an entirely left handed lineup.

    Posted by: paul1040@aol.com | September 24, 2006 01:39 PM

****! what are they supposed to have middle hand batters too?

or are u talking about switch?

  360. rob.bush@excite.com

Hello all. What a great start by Moose so far. 2 innings, 17 pitches. Wow. Only flaw was that double, but Cano made a great play to erase it.

  361. a24diun@yahoo.com

Ugh @ NFL scores, Carolina leading Bucs (Jeter and Tino’s team) 17-0. My fantasy team just shed a tear.********, that was close for Bobby.

  362. a24diun@yahoo.com

Andrew I thought they were not playing till Monday? (But I agree, Falcons will whup Nawlins.)

Another 1-2-3 for Moose and he has thrown half as many pitches as Stokes.

  363. paul1040@aol.com

I used to be a rabid Giant fan also, Lola, but after Ray Handley (“SweaterBoy”) replaced Parcells and the team got rid of Phil Simms and Dave Hostetler in the same year to go with Dave Brown, who should have worn a freaking dress, I gave up on that pathetic bunch of losers and was hoping they would go bankrupt and everyone in charge would lose their jobs and get an awful scratchy rash.

  364. sam13281328@aol.com

The bottom line is if we can’t beat Thurston Howell, or JP Howell, or Brian Stokes, or Shields or any of these cruddy Tampa pitchers, how we going to beat Santana, Rogres, Bonderman, or anyone on the A’s staff? Quit excusing RJ for last night. No way he should give up 5 runs to Tampa. Since our offense didn’t hit, if RJ would be half the pitcher he is suppose to be, then we lose 3-0, or 2-0 or something. Wright can go out there and give up 5 runs in 6 innings, so can Lidle. Step it up RJ, that is why you get 16 million…………..not to have a 5 ERA……

  365. paul1040@aol.com

The Giants toyed with my affection and they lost it.

I gave them another chance their last Super Bowl visit and they were soundly defeated. I was even rooting for them.

I have been a Patriot fan from before I moved to Boston. In NY you generally only like one team, like the Yankees and not the Mets, the Knicks and not the Nets, the Giants and not the Jets, the Islanders and not the Wets.

  366. sam13281328@aol.com

Right rob, but in a week, it is playoff time. How are we not scoring against Howell, Stokes, etc? I don’t think you can just the switch on and start hitting good. And RJ has one more start and we can’t sit and say, “well, give him one more shot, he will turn the corner” or we will be out of 1st round like last year

  367. Lola

Oh my, what a rant Paul! Geez, let my giants be, u can have ur pats. lol
I hear u though, lots of giants fans had the same rant. Truthfully, i didnt start following football in general till about 3 yrs ago when my brother started playing it.

Now i am all about the giants. I dont know much about the FO, but i love the current crop of players.

Eli has bounced back from last year and i really see us going very far, if not winning this year…

  368. paul1040@aol.com

As good as the Rays seem to hit, it is amazing they don’t have a better record.

Do they bring out a different team to face the Yankees?

OK, that makes no sense. The Yanks are 12-4 against Tampa this year.

  369. rob.bush@excite.com

Good grief. TB is getting the flukiest of fluky hits in this game. Dribblers, balls just inside the line, etc, etc.

  370. rob.bush@excite.com

2nd time through the lineup and suddenly it seems Moose is afraid to throw a stike. Good ****, retired the minimum through 3 and now he can’t get an out.

“Jeter’s error changed the way I needed to pitch.”

  371. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

OMG.. the Rays are so killing us. Mussina is horrible!! We will never get out of the first round of the playoffs..the sky is falling!! The sky is falling!

    Okay.. i’m finished channelling, lol.

  372. yankeefan1@enter.net

with doing the show, I’m on about 4 things at once now. Just wondering about the throwing error on Jeter…was it pure, or was it an error that a more experienced 1b could have “saved”…fill me in. Thanks.

  373. rob.bush@excite.com

Mike, Jeter pulled Sheffield off the bag. That’s all I know, from what Sterling said on the radio. Don’t know if Sheffield should share the blame or not.

  374. Lola

lol, Moose is gonna be so pissed at his teamates for costing him his 20 win season.
he has 20 errors behind him so far, the most bbehind him ever.

  375. sam13281328@aol.com

    Game 1 Wang
    Game 2 Rasner

    Game 3 Karstens

Game 4 Bruney,Villone, Proctor,RJ and Moose if needed

    Game 5 Wang.

    Our starting ALDS pitching…..

  376. yankeefan1@enter.net

thanks. Trying to listen to our radio show and help produce it by iM (usu. we are live 6-8 but tonight’s is pre-recorded), watch Steelers on tV (w/mute on) and follow Yanks on Gameday….whew.

  377. a24diun@yahoo.com

Wow that is a LOT of errors. I didn’t know it was that many. Since he is one of the best fielding pitchers in baseball that is the ultimate in bad irony 😦

  378. paul1040@aol.com

They say that Sheffield is using Craig Wilson’s glove. I don’t understand since Sheffield made a big deal about ordering a 1B glove back when the Yanks got Abreu.

Is it being made by a sherpa in Nepal and being sent over by yak train?

  379. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Sam, you have no place to insult anyone on this blog. The amount of times you’ve eaten crow for the huge amount of stupid illogical comments you’ve made, you’re better off just piping down and putting your pacifier back in your mouth.

  380. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

russ maybe because we’ve been beating the tigers pitching, santana is one man and we don’t face oakland until the alcs and outside of haren, nobody else has given us trouble in that rotation this year? Or maybe its because the season ends if they lose to that guys, if we lose to these tampa rookies, its the difference of one game in the alcs being at home potentially. Oh and hello? The game is not over.

  381. paul1040@aol.com

    Wrong on Oakland, Vince.

Yanks are 3-6 against Oakland this year, 6 games in Yankee Stadium.

Oakland has been the worst nemesis for the Yanks this year. (4-6 vs the Angels)

  382. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

russ, we have homefield in the alds more than liekly and are guaranteed it in the ws, you are obsessing over the fact that if there was a game 6 or 7 in the alcs, we would be on the road where we have played well against all 3 teams competing against us in the playoffs this year.

  383. a24diun@yahoo.com

    //moose w/a meltdown//

Please this is not all his fault. Why don’t you blame the fielders for making so many errors behind him or the offense for sleeping. Same with Johnson yesterday, the blame does not all go to him, the offense was sleeping.

And now yet ANOTHER bad throw costs Moose runs. But it is all his fault right???

  384. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

paul i didn’t say we didn’t struggle with oakland this year, i said we didn’t struggle with anybody on their pitching staff except haren…which is true, haren has two of those wins. The rest was yankee pitching struggling against oakland hitting

  385. rob.bush@excite.com

And Posada bails this ******* out.******* I pissed at Moose. That was the ugliest piece of **** inning I’ve seen him throw ever.

  386. sam13281328@aol.com

NYY, I am not going to take Paul’s smart *** comments….and Vince, looks like we are going to have to do it on the road. We send our “aces” against Tampa and can’t win…come on….you happy w/Moose and RJ so far? I am not…….6-1 not over? right!!….unbelieveable…

  387. a24diun@yahoo.com

I know. 😦 Hopefully our bats will get loud now, give him a long half-inning of rest where he will hopefully attack Sunday Times crossword (in pen!) and come back to mound w/a renewed zeal.

  388. rob.bush@excite.com

Gina, you’re right that the defense didn’t help there. But the defense didn’t cause Moose to throw fat pitches right over the middle of the plate, either.

****, let’s just all agree that the whole team slept through that inning.

  389. yankeefan1@enter.net

One disturbing trend this year has been Mussina going to pieces after a teammate’s error. This isn’t the first time it has happened. You can blame the error, but a seasoned soon-to-be 38 year old Mussina should not let things get away from him like this.

  390. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

You’re not going to *take them? We’ve had to take your stupid comments all year!!

For someone who keeps telling us how they’ve been a fan for three thousand years, you sure dont seem to be ones. Someone who has been a fan for that long would show a bit more fundamental knowledge of baseball than you do. Unless of course it just goes in one ear and out the other, which is likely.

  391. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

russ if you have not learned anything about this team this year than i cannot help you. This is why pitchers make 30+ starts per season, not to be judged on one. There is a major difference between veteran pitchers pitching for their season and pitching to condition for pitching for their season. 6-1 game over? I guess tampa pitching is superior to texas if you feel that way. You live and die with your team each game in the playoffs in the NFL, not when your team has clinched and it is a 162 game regular season, critcize moose and rj if they pitch the game that ends our season

  392. a24diun@yahoo.com

I can agree with that Rob. Bad inning on a lot of people’s parts. I know Moose threw some garbage pitches and I can accept people calling him out for that as long as he isnt expected to shoulder ALL the blame.

  393. paul1040@aol.com

  394. marksman@ny-yankees.net

I have a solution to Moose’s problem. We manufacture a bunch of robots that look exactly like the players and that can do no wrong and have them field whenever Moose pitches.

  395. a24diun@yahoo.com

//6-1 game over? I guess tampa pitching is superior to texas if you feel that way.//

Right on! I was just about to remind the naysayer of that 9-run come from behind against Texas. If we can do that to them, NO reason we cannot do it to TB’s bullpen.

  396. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Hmm, those stats vs Oakland are not great definitely. 😦

I am hoping that the team the yankees are now is different to the ones in April, May and June. Although, they are not showing that today thus far.

  397. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Then theoretically we should have come back from the 8-0 deficit yesterday against the same terrible Tampa pitching.

  398. Lola

u know whats funny though…that inning started off on a jeter error until it all went downhill.
but no one will remember jeter when they talk of what went wrong, thats how big of a rockstar the jeet is 😀

boy, it’d be cool to have jeter’s untouchable status. ha ha

  399. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

andrew i didn’t say we should come back i said we could comeback, have u been hanging around with russ and kasey lately?

paul the only thing those games proved is jaret wright can lose to oakland, haren can shut us down and saarlos had a fluke good start against our injured lineup, that is it.

  400. paul1040@aol.com

Every blog has its share of blithering idiots. With these 2 games I would not be surprised if that gene twit showed up to tell us the Yanks are not going to make the post season this year and next.

  401. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

I knew it was Jeter’s error, lol.
A lot of things contributed to that inning. But then, I’d feel the same way if anyone else had made that error too. 🙂

  402. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

were just lucky fagan has left his verbal retardation on the sox blog since his return, though ian apparently does not condone a civil blog

  403. rob.bush@excite.com

    Separate topic:

Something that has always kind of perplexed me is the use of the term “RBIs.” It seems to me that the plural of “RBI” should be the same, “RBI.” I think that since the abreviation stands for “run batted in.” The plural of that would be “runs batted in,” would it not? So shouldn’t the abbreviation always be “RBI,” whether plural or singular?

Just one of those things that have always bothered me. (Yeah, I probably have too much time on my hands right now.)

  404. a24diun@yahoo.com

Thank you Sterling for pointing out that offense left bases loaded twice.
Moose had one bad inning but if they lose no way is it 100% his fault.

  405. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

When its used as RBI, does it become its own word and is subject to apostrophe rules because of that?

I have no idea, just thinking aloud.

  406. Lola

i am suprised only 2 of those runs were earned. i would have thought it’d be 4 earned. Can someone explain it to me? :-/

    Bottom 4TH B:0 S:2 O:0

Rocco Baldelli doubles (23) on a ground ball to left fielder Aaron Guiel.

    Bottom 4TH B:0 S:1 O:0

Delmon Young reaches on throwing error by shortstop Derek Jeter.

    Bottom 4TH B:0 S:1 O:0

With Carl Crawford batting, wild pitch by Mike Mussina, Rocco Baldelli to 3rd.

    Bottom 4TH B:0 S:1 O:0

    On-field Delay.

    Bottom 4TH B:1 S:1 O:0

Carl Crawford singles on a ground ball to first baseman Gary Sheffield. Rocco Baldelli scores. Delmon Young to 2nd.

    Bottom 4TH B:3 S:2 O:2

Ben Zobrist singles on a ground ball to second baseman Robinson Cano. Dioner Navarro scores. B. J. Upton scores.

    Bottom 4TH B:0 S:1 O:3

    Bottom 4TH B:0 S:1 O:3

With Rocco Baldelli batting, Ben Zobrist caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Jorge Posada to second baseman Robinson Cano.

  407. rob.bush@excite.com

Now that I think about it, I usually see only “RBI” in print. It is in speaking that I hear “RBIs” a lot.

Lola, I think only 2 were earned because:

1 run scored by a runner who reached on an error.

3 scored after the 2nd out.

  408. a24diun@yahoo.com

Angel I agree that every time the defense has cost him runs he has contributed to the inevitable loss too.
I think it is just frustrating to him b/c he is such a good fielder w/several Gold Gloves.

Just praying he is okay now cause we need him to be.

  409. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not picking on Moosey. Just that if he didnt come back, that would be a silly reason for him not to, because it hasn’t just been that that has cost him games.

  410. rob.bush@excite.com

Well, folks. I’m afraid I will have to miss the come back. Talk to you all later.

At least Cano is helping my fantasy team.

  411. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Great home run for Cano. I only wish it had come with some men on base.

Is it just me, or have the Yankees had a seriously lacking number of 2R and 3R home runs this season? Most of them seem to be solo shots.

  412. a24diun@yahoo.com

I know you’re not Angel. 🙂 I don’t really think he would not come back because of that, I’m just anxious in general about him coming back.
I’m uber-protecive of the Moose (say it aint so lol) but I think everyone here is being fair to him. He does get some of the blame for that inning but so does Jeter. What originally set me off is that one poster who wanted to blame the whole thing on him like he blamed the whole thing on Randy yesterday.

  413. paul1040@aol.com

I was thinking that also, Andrew.

I saw an interesting statistic. Do you know what player leads all of baseball with men on base in front of him?

  414. Lola

Gina, u are protective of Moose like i am of Alex. ha ha. i broke off friendships cause of Alex dissing, seriously. I cant date a guy that doesnt like alex, or shows no signs of being converted. lol…i take everything alex related to heart.

If I have one thing that I dont get about Torre is that he plays percentages/match-ups sometimes a bit too much. My gut tells this might not be a good move.

  416. a24diun@yahoo.com

People who diss Alex deserve to be forced to trade their pinstriped jerseys in for a Mets one. Jussayin’ I don’t think anyone who boos him should be allowed to call themselves a Yankee fan.

LOL ironically my boyfriend always makes fun of Moose.. he calls him a woman and mocks his delivery. I think he is just jealous 🙂

  417. paul1040@aol.com

OK, maybe the Islanders are as bad.

They picked the goaltender to be the GM.

Who is the coach this week? Maybe a hot dog vendor?

  418. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Hmm, Villone worries us again.

    Sigh. I hate the Phollies.

Respect Utley and Howard, but rooting for them is like rooting for Boston for me. Can’t stand them.

  419. a24diun@yahoo.com

Right on I trust Rasner to get out of this but it seems like Bruney hasnt pitched in a while..I know theyre trying to cut down on him a bit but how long has it been since he pitched at all now?

  420. a24diun@yahoo.com

    //Sigh. I hate the Phollies//
Awww why no love for the Phils?

As much as I like Howard and Utley it is Pat Burrell that is really my boy. He endeared himself to me quick fast and in a hurry.

  421. btide21@aim.com

If Rasner gets out of this jam with 1 or no runs scored, I’d take him over Villone for the playoffs with the way Villone is struggling.

  422. yankeefan1@enter.net

a24…Where I live, I get them drummed down my throat all the time–as with other Pholly teams. The reporters here kiss their ***** all of the time.

I usually root for my teams and whoever plays Philadelphia. Regardless of sport.

    Nothing personal.

  423. a24diun@yahoo.com

Right on BT (Alex right?) Pat the Bat! 😀

This is the first time Rasner has seemed to have not as good stuff as usual. This game is turning so depressing.

  424. yankeefan1@enter.net

Sorry, I have some things to do. Gotta go for now. My Sundays are very busy with my church, reading a couple of papers, the Yanks (and now football as well) and spending two-two and a half hours with the Internet show. Need to catch up on different stuff!

  425. kayleexxx@aol.com

i am ging to watch the cleveland game cause i have to see grady sizemore hit if they would stop walking him.
    I thought tampa bay s*cked.

  426. a24diun@yahoo.com

It’s cool Yankfan. 🙂 Philly fans and the media can indeed be hostile and delusional. That annoys the life out of me when it comes to the Eagles, Flyers and even Sixers, but not the Phils for some reason. They are the ONLY local team I root for.

  427. a24diun@yahoo.com

    Yes Bucs!!

Yeah Pat the Bat needs to work on his batting lol. I think they are getting ready to give up on him.

okay this game SERIOUSLY blows. I think I may put on the Bucs or Phils now.

  428. a24diun@yahoo.com

//because the phillies are the only team that consistantly misses the playoffs//

Yep that likely has a lot to do with why. Also Met fans hate them, making it easier for me to like them. 🙂

  429. a24diun@yahoo.com

I just hope the team can put this display of immense badness behind them after it ends. Forget it ever happened move on and start playing like the team they are.

  430. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Well I’d rather they have a bad stretch at the end of the regular season then catch fire when the playoffs start.

  431. btide21@aim.com

The Yankees have done nothing right today and they’ve played horribly in all facets of the game the past 2 days…but other than that they’ve done fine.

  432. ataustin@aol.com

    From MLB.com:

Mike Mussina left Sunday’s game against the Rays with two outs in the fifth inning after being struck by a ball.

Mussina has a mild bruise on the base of his left thumb.

  433. a24diun@yahoo.com

Agreed, let them get some bad baseball out of their system now so we don’t see any in playoffs.
I just hope both Moose and RJ have the chance to have good outings before season ends.

  434. a24diun@yahoo.com

Hahaha WCBS just said next season Girardi goes to Cubs and Lou Piniella goes to Marlins?! He is going to ruin those kids! Loria the dumb-butt will be sorry.

  435. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

I dont know, Paul. I can’t say I’m too happy with how they’re playing these last two games. Its not like they dont have anything to play for, after all.

  436. ataustin@aol.com

They’ll get it going this week. They’re probably coasting a little emotionally after clinching, but that’s natural. I’d rather they do this than have to sprint to the end like last year.

  437. a24diun@yahoo.com

    *sniffle* at Bucs loss. 😦
For me, the wrong Tampa team “showed up” today. Boooo.

Now it is up to the Giants and da Bears to put at least a small smile on my face today.

Anyone have any updates on Moose’s hand?

  438. btide21@aim.com

“They’re probably coasting a little emotionally after clinching”

They could still be hungover a little bit after clinching.

  439. a24diun@yahoo.com

That’s what I’m saying. I’m confused as to why Bruney and Veras were not used today. Maybe he wants to save em for when we are winning? ??

  440. btide21@aim.com

“Torre mentioned the possibility of the Melkman getting some time in center later this week to prepare him for the possibility of being the fourth outfielder for the playoffs.”

Thanks Joe, I’ve been saying that everyday Damon gets a day off.

  441. a24diun@yahoo.com

And it’s over. Here’s hoping everyone on the team wakes up from this nightmare unscathed tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday everybody.

  442. btide21@aim.com

The Mets had simlilar troubles after they clinched. They won the first game after but then lost 3 striaght to Florida and Washington…Hopefully the Yankees will have the Wright stuff tomorrow…(haha sorry couldn’t resist.)

  443. marksman@ny-yankees.net

    Top 6TH B:2 S:1 O:2
Grady Sizemore hits an inside-the-park home run (27) on a fly ball to left field. Aaron Boone scores.

    Wow…

  444. gonyy27@yahoo.com

Hey everyone, these last two games have reminded me of last year, Yanks vs. D-Rays, but at least they’re meaningless, Moose and Randy have another start to get themselves together, and the o has a week to wake up. I’m not worried right now. And even if the Yanks don’t get home field, they still open at home against the Twins and the only way they wouldn’t get home field in the LCS would be by playing the Tigers in Detroit, which is nowhere near as scary as the Metrodome or anywhere else.
At least my Packers won *golf clap*

I have a busy week ahead of me and probably won’t be around much, but I’ll see you all when I can.

  445. rob.bush@excite.com

Yuck. So I come back to find that Villone actually getting an out to end the inning was a fluke and he has reverted to his normal, since mid-August, self. I’m sorry, but if Joe puts that guy on the post-season roster, then somebody needs to do a chemical analysis of his coffee.

My take on Girardi: how about the Yankees win the Series, Joe retires, and Girardi comes back to manage the Yankees next year?

  446. ataustin@aol.com

I love Girardi, but I’m not sure he’s far enough removed from Jeter, Posada, etc, to manage them. I’m also not sure he has the right temperment to work for Steinbrenner.

  447. yankeefan1@enter.net

    Show prerecorded.

I think Yanks will step it up a notch come Tuesday when they return home. They are human and probably have hit “cruise control” after the clinch. Not consciously, per se, but subconsciously.

Remember in 1998 that the Yanks went into cruise control about a week or two before the end of the season (I believe it was in Tampa as well) and Joe had to lay into them a little.
